How to turn off Smart Network Switch notification on Samsung Galaxy S5
Problem: Dear Droid Guy. I saw the below exchange on Thedroidguy.com regarding my issue, but the “fix” is not what I’m looking for:
Hi, I have a Samsung galaxy s5. When I am at home on Wi-Fi I repeatedly (about every 2 minutes) get a pop up that says connected to Wi-Fi (with the wifi name). I am actually always connected at home.
I have had that phone for about a month and a half but this just started about a week ago. I have checked all Wi-Fi settings and they are fine.
How do I fix this? It is very frustrating along with the phone freezing all the time. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. — Tina
Troubleshooting: Hello. I assume you are connected to the Internet via mobile data. However, your phone, somehow, connects to a WiFi network and this could only happen if WiFi is enabled. If you don’t want your phone to keep connecting to his network time and time again, disable WiFi.
But just in case you are connected via WiFi and this “Brightbox” network is your own, then the problem occurs because mobile data is enabled in your phone. There are two ways to prevent this error message from popping up; either you disable mobile data or the Smart Network Switch option.
From the Home screen, tap Apps icon.
Untick the checkbox next to Smart network switch.
This procedure may also fix the battery draining problem.
I want my phone to switch from Wi-Fi to 4G as necessary for faster service, I just don’t want the pop up to tell me over and over again. Is there a way to turn off the pop up without turning off Smart Network Switch? Thank you. — Mae
Troubleshooting: Hi Mae. We understand your point. The pop-up message that shows every few minutes is an indicator that one of the networks in your area is not stable (data) and a switch to another one (Wi-Fi) is detected to be more preferable. The thing is, there is no setting in your phone’s operating system right now to stop the phone from notifying users that they have been switched to another network via Smart Network Switch feature. Samsung designed Smart Network Switch to update users when their device connects to another network. Unfortunately, they have not anticipated that generating constant notification can be annoying.
Samsung Galaxy S5 SD card issue after Lollipop update
Problem: I upgraded to Lollipop 4 days ago and I’m using a Sprint Samsung Galaxy S5. Right away my phone was performing slow and began to overheat. This would also drain the battery very quickly. It was hell. Finally, I removed the SD card and it solved the problem, but I’m not sure if it’s an issue with the card itself or an app that was on the card. Obviously I want access to my card. Any help is greatly appreciated. — Thanasi
Troubleshooting: Hi Thanasi. Android 5.0 (Lollipop) is supposed to make your phone perform significantly faster because it now employs ART (Android RunTime), which is, in theory, better than Dalvik. The drawback of ART though is that it requires more storage space but it’s only meant to technically utilize the phone’s internal storage while leaving a micro SD card untouched.
But because you have isolated the cause of the issue (SD card), the best solution that you can do right now is to create a copy of the contents of that SD card on your computer. Once a copy of your personal files is secured, reinsert the SD card to your phone and reformat it. This is an important step to ensure that the SD card is compatible with the phone’s date structure.

Samsung Galaxy S5 draining battery faster after Lollipop update
Problem: Hi. I updated my Galaxy S5 SM-G900F to official Lollipop about 3 weeks ago. The battery seemed to perform fine. But now, it’s draining faster than ever, even if the device is idle. On KitKat, my battery would last at least 2 days based on usage, but after Lollipop, it merely lasts for 22-24 hours. I installed Gsam battery monitor and it said my Android system and OS were draining about 30% of my battery while the battery settings said android system and OS were draining 3%. I looked up on the Internet and most of the solution was a factory reset or wipe cache partition. I wiped the cache partition and it only got a bit worse. Doing a factory reset on my S2 made it worse. So should I reset my S5 to solve the battery issue? Thanks in advance. — Hanniel
Troubleshooting: Hi Hanniel. When a major operating system update like Lollipop is released, it usually takes some time for app developers to make their respective apps become fully compatible. Depending on the installed apps on your phone, they may or may not be main reason for faster battery drain. The best thing that you can do here is to check the battery usage feature to see which apps eat up power the most. Make sure that you update as many apps as possible.
Performing Safe Mode can also aid in isolating if third party apps are causing the problem.
If the problem remains after doing the things above, a factory reset won’t hurt in this case. A lot of S5 owners were surprised to see marked improvements after doing this step so we hope you will have the same experience afterwards.

AOL account stopped working in Samsung Galaxy S5
Problem: As of this morning I am no longer getting my emails on my phone. I kept getting a “sign in required” notification and when I clicked it I was told “Authentication Failed”. I’ve changed my password and still nothing. Please help. Sprint passed me off to AOL and since I have the free account with them, they won’t help. Sincerely. — Rich
Troubleshooting: Hi Rich. We’re sorry to hear about this problem. An authentication error occurs when a device trying to log-in to an account like you AOL email is unable to secure permission to do so successfully. This can either mean a user like you is putting incorrect credentials or the email servers simply do not allow access anymore. It appears that the problem is with AOL servers after all so you must find a way to get help from AOL support team to check the status of your account. If you configured your AOL email in a default email app on your S5, try to delete your account and try recreate it.
If you don’t know the configuration details of your AOL account, try to find a way to contact AOL support to ask for them.
Missing Silent mode in Samsung Galaxy S5 after Lollipop update
Problem: Hi. We have 2 Galaxy S5 phones which have recently been updated automatically – both phones now have the following issues:
We can no longer put the phones on ‘silent’ – they are either on normal or vibrate only.
We can no longer find the ‘blocking mode’ option.
Both phones were fine before the update. Any ideas please? Thanks. — J.Rawnsley
Troubleshooting: Hi J. Rawnsley. The new Android Lollipop update has dumped Silent mode and replace it with Priority mode or Interrupt mode. We don’t think this is a mistake but we say it’s a poorly advised feature over Silent mode.
You can access Interrupt mode by going to Menu>Settings>Sound & Notifications>interruptions. You will be presented with three tabs after selecting Interruptions:
None. If you select this option, your alarms won’t go off and you will not receive any tone notifications.
Priority. This option will allow some notifications from certain apps and calls to go through.
All. This slider will allow all notifications to go through.
Keep in mind that the slider can only go down to “vibrate”, which means that if you want to achieve full silence on your phone while allowing some notifications form all people and apps, you have to do tweak a lot of settings in priority mode.
There are a lot of users complaining that there is no easy and simple way of just pressing the volume down to silence the phone while, say, in a meeting. While there is no official word from Google if they are bringing the Silent mode back in the next update, we hope that they will do so for you and me.
Cover Lock Screen app not working properly after Lollipop update on Samsung Galaxy S5
Problem: I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 (Model SM-G900T), and just updated to Android 5.0 on T-Mobile. One of favorite apps is Cover Lock Screen (beta) — I have version 0.1.13, the most the recent update from July 2, 2014. Looks like the guys at Coverscreen have turned their attention to another project with Twitter, so I don’t know if I will get a response to my email sent to them, or if the app is going to be updated to deal with any problems with the new Android OS.
So here is the problem. When I power the phone on or turn it back on after screen timeout, instead of getting the Cover Lock screen, I get a black screen with the notification bar across the top. I can push the power key (for a two count) on the front of the phone to get to the regular lock screen, but I don’t get the Cover lock screen. When the phone is active, I can open the app from the icon and it appears fully functioning. I have checked the settings on both the Cover app and the settings for Android lock screen and display, but can’t seem to find a way to get it to work as it used to. I know this is probably not a huge problem in the big picture, but I sure hope there is a way to get the Cover app working again. Any suggestions?

Troubleshooting: Hi Lon. We are glad to hear that you did not encounter some of the issues that we tackled in our previous posts.
As regards your issue, it appears that is isolated based on our research. We hoped to find a similar issue in some other forums and possible solution but came up empty. It’s very likely that the developer is still working on an updated patch of the software so that it works perfectly with the newly released Lollipop update. We suggest that you contact the Cover Team directly through Twitter. They have three great guys (Todd (@tjack), Edward (@mrdonut), and Gordon (@getluky) that will surely help you find the answer to the bug of their product.
Wi-Fi issues after updating Samsung Galaxy S5 to Lollipop
Problem: Actually before I updated to Lollipop, I had issues w/ the Wi-Fi — it kept connecting then reconnecting on same network even when the signal strength was strong. Then I was told by Verizon who was told by Samsung, to do an update called Lollipop and that would resolve it. Since it has never worked I checked your website which recommended to uncheck the “Smart Network Switch”. That fixed the issue!
But I now have a different issue from Lollipop. Wi-Fi is now scanning for a network every 5 seconds constantly, even when I’m connected to a network w/ a strong signal strength, therefore, if drains my battery and I think it is somewhat related. The phone’s reception of 4G & data has gotten worse more consistently than before I update to Lollipop.
Also from the update to Lollipop, I can’t minimize internet pages within the Internet app. In the old operating system, I was able to minimize pages and open and close pages within the app. Now I have to go to the Task Manager to do that which is an extra step. Furthermore, the Task Manager can only have 15 items open at one time.
Some more items to add to the list in my original email. And I already tried unchecking the smart switch network box for Wi-Fi as well as go to Safe Mode to see if the apps are the cause of all these issues, and cleared my cache, all to no avail! The entire phone is running slow/sluggish, and with some operations it even freezes.
The alarm won’t sound when you put the phone on mute. The prior operating system allowed me to mute the phone and still have the alarm sound, this way I only mute calls, emails, texts, notifications.
The auto brightness feature doesn’t brighten the phone enough in darker times of the day, it worked correctly w/ the old operating system. — Fabio
Troubleshooting: Hi Fabio. We can see that you are experiencing multiple issues after updating to Android 5.0 (Lollipop). The truth is, more other issues are surfacing weeks after this update was rolled out and Google must be working at a double to fix all of them. Frankly, we have no handy solution for the issue regarding your phone which keeps on scanning for other wireless networks. An issue like this can be caused by a few factors including incompatible or corrupted third party apps and operating system misconfigurations. To minimize the bugs after the update, we suggest that you restore the phone to its factory defaults and install only trusted third party apps for now. Keep in mind that an operating system developer like Google can only anticipate potential problems so much so let’s wait for more updates in the near future to fix all Lollipop-related glitches.
As regards your alarm issue, we covered an issue above in this same article that talks about missing Silent mode in Lollipop OS. We think that what you need here is to opt Priority under Interruptions so you can pick what app or feature to allow to give sound notifications.
Lastly, Adaptive brightness has replaced auto brightness feature of KitKat although both still works the same fundamentally. Adaptive brightness only added an ability for a user to choose screen brightness and once base brightness has been established, the adaptive mode will just adjust itself based on the brightness of the surroundings.
How to change vibration pattern in Samsung Galaxy S5 after Lollipop update
Problem: Hello. My situation is not necessarily a problem but more of an annoyance. I have to keep my phone on vibrate mode at work. Before the update, my emails would come through as a continuous vibration and my text messages would come through as a 2 pulse vibration. Now since the update my text are all a continuous vibration like my emails so I don’t know the difference anymore. Can you help? I can’t find anywhere to change it. — Mike
Troubleshooting: Hi Mike. Try checking the Interruptions feature and play around with the vibration type to see what fits you best. You can go to Settings > Sounds and notifications > Vibration intensity to do this.
Missing notifications in Samsung Galaxy S5 after Lollipop update
Problems: Hello! I am Hoping you can help. Recently updated my Galaxy S5 OS to Lollipop. Since the update, I no longer see message notifications on my lock screen. I am actually hoping it’s a bug and will eventually be fixed, and not a new feature of the OS.
With Kit Kat, a text message would “wake” my sleeping phone, opening it to the lock screen where a notification of an incoming text message would posted. Since Lollipop, when I receive a text, the phone remains sleeping. Should I happen to hear the alert and check the lock screen for the notification, it’s not there. Well it’s not open anyway. There are cards on my lock screen. But text messages and emails are contained in a separate card that looks more like a secondary notification bar. I need to touch it to open the notifications within. I’ve attached a picture in hopes of clarifying (Secondary notification bar below two clock).
I’ve searched my settings to make sure I don’t have some privacy settings preventing the message notifications from showing on my lock screen, but have come up empty.

Troubleshooting: Hi Jay. Not everyone is fond of the new Lollipop update and that includes you, we think. Unfortunately (or fortunately) for you, your observation about the new lockscreen is not a bug. This is how Lollipop OS notifies users of all sorts of messages from their apps.
The good thing about the new lockscreen feature is that a user can now select what type of notification to display and hiding notifications from apps you tag as “sensitive”. This means that you can tweak a setting of any app to set its notifications as sensitive, preventing the phone from displaying sensitive contents of a notification text on the lock screen. This does not mean you will not be receiving notifications anymore for, say, email. Rather, what you’ll still get notifications about incoming emails but they will not display the subject lines of those messages.
