On March 1st, Samsung took the stage in Barcelona to announce the new Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. There, on stage, the company confirmed many of the key details including Galaxy S6 specs, the Galaxy S6 design, and even the Galaxy S6 release date. Both the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge will arrive starting April 10th.
Despite having an official date, the Samsung Galaxy S6 release date remains a bit of a mystery here in the United States and in countries around the world. As we’ve pushed further away from the launch date, we’ve finally started to see key information flow and today, another piece of the Galaxy S6 release date timeline has landed.
According to Hi-Tech Mail, a Russian publication, the Galaxy S6 release date in Russia will miss the initial Galaxy S6 release date on April 10th. Instead, it appears that Russia is planning a Galaxy S6 release on April 16th, or a week after the initial release date. While this hasn’t been confirmed by Samsung, the source is solid, and this appears to knock another potential candidate off the mysterious list of countries set to get the device on April 10th. Samsung says that 20 regions will get the devices on that day but it hasn’t revealed whom.
US Galaxy S6 buyers are hopeful that they will be included in the initial Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge releases though nothing is confirmed. In the days since launch, the US Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge models have passed through the FCC which is necessary before they can hit shelves. This doesn’t confirm an early release but it does make one possible.
More recently, Verizon became the first US carrier to announce specific Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 release details. The Verizon Galaxy S6 release date hasn’t been confirmed but the carrier now says that it will be taking pre-orders on April 1st.
While the carrier confirmed the Galaxy S6 pre-order date, it left out the other pertinent details including price, colors, and storage. Those dominos should fall ahead of their release but with plenty of time left before April 1st and April 10th, Verizon can take its time. And with Verizon now open about its pre-orders, it should only be a matter of time before we see these remaining carriers confirm their own release details.
The new Galaxy S6 comes with an assortment of upgrades including a 5.1-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display with 577 ppi, Exynos 7 octo-core processor from Samsung, 32/64/128GB of storage with no microSD card slot, Android 5.0 Lollipop with a new version of Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface, a 16MP camera, a 5MP front-facing camera, Cat.6 LTE, and a 2550 mAh (Galaxy S6) and 2600 mAh battery (S6 Edge).
Samsung’s Galaxy S6 Edge will come with similar specifications though its will feature a unique curved display that bends down over the two sides of the phone. Both the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy Edge eschew plastic in favor of a bold new design that features a combination of metal and glass that also features Corning’s Gorilla Glass 4.
The Galaxy S6 Edge will only be available on the five largest carriers in the US.
