A new Samsung Galaxy S6 update is rolling out today and it promises to fix some of the initial Galaxy S6 problems plaguing owners of the company’s brand new flagships. With the roll out underway, we take a look at what Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge users need to know about their first major bug fix update.
In April, Samsung finally released its all new Galaxy S6 flagship smartphones. As expected, the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge come packed with a number of high-end features including a new design language featuring metal and glass, a new 16MP camera with Optical Image Stabilization, an efficient Exynos 7 octa-core processor, and the company’s TouchWiz UI over Android 5.0 Lollipop.
As we push away from the Galaxy S6 release date, we’re starting to see Galaxy S6 owners provide feedback about their new smartphone. Many Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge users are reporting a very solid experience but others have run into Galaxy S6 problems ranging from issues with the device’s battery life to problems with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
Today, Samsung’s taken a big step towards correcting those problems as it has begun pushing out highly anticipated bug fix updates for both the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. The updates are expected to correct at least one major Galaxy S6 problem though there’s always a chance that they could alleviate more than that.
Here’s what Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge users need to know about their latest Lollipop update, a bug fixer that could prove to be an extremely important update for many people.
Galaxy S6 Update Hitting Both Models
This new Samsung Galaxy S6 update is rolling out to both the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. That doesn’t come as too much of a surprise given that Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge users both have been running into issues in the weeks after the Galaxy S6’s initial release.
So far the Galaxy S6 Edge is great, but our Galaxy S6 lags slightly.
From what we can tell, the update is around 140MB in size which is much larger than your standard bug fix update. This is a significant release for both the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge.
Galaxy S6 Update Release Limited Right Now
As of right now, these Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge updates are limited to very specific regions. The Galaxy S6 update is currently rolling out to SM-G920 users in Italy. The update is currently rolling out to users on Vodafone Italy though it’s expected to expand soon.
As for the Galaxy S6 Edge update, it’s currently rolling out to Vodafone users in the United Kingdom. Like the Galaxy S6 update, the Galaxy S6 Edge bug fix update is expected to start rolling out to other carriers and other regions in the near future.
Samsung’s Android updates typically start off slowly before they pick up steam in the weeks, sometimes months, after the initial release. Once the update is available, a download prompt will appear. Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge users will also want to manually check in Settings though Samsung’s roll outs are extremely random and unpredictable.
Upcoming Galaxy S6 Updates
Samsung’s Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge updates are limited but that doesn’t mean that we don’t have a read on some upcoming updates.
While most carriers are silent about their plans, we have spotted a few upcoming updates that users need to be aware of. Australian carriers Vodafone and Telstra have both confirmed upcoming Android 5.0.2 Lollipop bug fix updates for their versions of the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. And if they are planning roll outs, you can bet that other carriers have updates up their sleeves for the future.
Vodafone’s Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge bug fix updates failed in testing and the carrier says that it’s awaiting a re-release from Samsung. It’s not clear how long that will take. Telstra on the other hand says that it plans to roll the updates out on May 25th. That’s a target date and everything depends on the testing process behind the scenes.
Galaxy S6 Update & Features
These Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge Lollipop updates are, according to their change logs, bug fix updates. The updates are said to include device stability improvements, bug fixes, new and or enhanced features, and further improvements to performance.
According to GSMArena, the updates are focused on fixing memory issues and performance problems. The site claims that the software seems to have fixed the issues and that the Galaxy S6 in particular feels “snappier.” This is a good sign for Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge users around the world.
Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge users have been complaining about lag particularly with the keyboard and it would appear that Samsung’s new update has squashed those problems. Change logs could differ from carrier- to-carrier but we’d expect the same base set of bug fixes for each update.
Galaxy S6 Problems & Fixes
While this Galaxy S6 update is aimed at fixing problems, there’s always a chance that it will cause some problems of its own. Galaxy users always assume some risk when choosing to install a brand new update as updates, big and small, can have a negative impact on performance.
