The battle of the entry-level smartphones is getting fiercer with each passing day. Every major brand seems to be coming up with attractively-priced, feature-rich devices vying to rule the low-price bracket of the smartphone market. The Samsung Galaxy Star Pro and the Micromax Canvas Fun A63 are two such devices that we are going to compare today in order to find out which one fares better.
Design & Build Quality
The design of the Samsung Galaxy Star Pro is exactly like all the other Galaxy devices. It has a plastic body and a metal finish band separating the back panel from the front. It is available in white and black colours. The Micromax Canvas Fun A63, on the other hand, is funky, sleek and slim phone that easily fits in the pocket. It is available in yellow, blue and black colours. The Samsung Galaxy Star Pro’s design has been repeated way too many times. So much so that it has almost become impossible to tell apart the Galaxy devices anymore.

Display & Audio Performance
The Samsung Galaxy Star Pro has a 4 inches TFT capacitive touchscreen with a WVGA (480 x 800 pixels) resolution that gives an effective pixel density of about 233 PPI. The Micromax Canvas Fun too has a 4 inches TFT capacitive touchscreen display with WVGA resolution. While both the devices have almost similar display, the Galaxy Star Pro fares slightly better when it comes to displaying colours.
The speaker of the Galaxy Star Pro is located on the rear, right beside the camera button. The audio quality of the phone is really good when it comes to playing the audio, however, it deteriorates drastically when we tried to play video files. The audio quality of the Canvas Fun A63 is quite poor if you solely rely on its speakers. It gets better when you plug in the earphone though.
Winner: Samsung Galaxy Star Pro
The Samsung Galaxy Star Pro runs on a 1GHz single-core Spreadtrum SC6820 processor based on ARM Cortex A5 CPU. The mediocre performance of the device could be attributed to its slow single-core processor and only 512MB of RAM. Playing games on the Samsung Galaxy Star Pro turns out to be a decent experience thanks to the Mali-400MP GPU but we experienced occasional frame drops while playing the high end games.
The Micromax Canvas Fun A63 runs on 1.3GHz dual-core MediaTek MT6572 chipset based on ARM Cortex A7 CPU. Just like the Galaxy Star Pro, the Canvas Fun A63 comes with 512MB of RAM and Mali-400MP GPU. However, the Canvas Fun A63 appears to be a better device when it comes to running multiple apps at once. Apart from the 5 MP back shooter, the Canvas A63 even comes with a VGA front camera which is quite rare for the entry-level smartphones. The Samsung Galaxy Star Pro only houses a 2 MP primary camera.

Software Quality & Features
The Galaxy Star Pro comes preloaded with Android v4.1.2 Jelly Bean with TouchWiz UI. The UI feels average and if you run multiple applications at once the frame transitions tend to lag.
The Canvas Fun A63 comes preloaded with Android v4.2.2 JellyBean. As far as the UI is concerned, it is responsive and is a smooth experience overall. And there is software update option from Micromax.
Connectivity and Battery Endurance
Both the smartphones come with dual SIM card slots and Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth v4.0 and microUSB v2.0 port that can be used for charging and as well as PC connection. One of the biggest disadvantages of buying the Galaxy Star Pro could be that it lacks 3G compatibility.
Both the devices have 1500 mAh Li-Ion battery but the Galaxy Star Pro can give an impressive talk time of up to 15 hours while the Canvas Fun A63 only promises a talk time of 4 hours. The battery of the Galaxy Star Pro can last for 370 hours on standby while the Canvas Fun A63 can withstand 135 hours in that mode.
