Despite packing in a 10 inch display, the GALAXY Tab 2 10.1 is pretty lightweight. The Tab weighs just 581 grams and measures just 9.7mm thin. That makes it lighter than the new iPad, and also lighter than most other 9-10″ tablets on the market. This makes the Tab 2 10.1 more enjoyable to hold for longer periods of time, especially while reading.
The Tab 2 sports a 10.1” WXGA PLS TFT display with a 1280×800 resolution at 149ppi. Granted, the ppi is not as high as a retina display, but it’s still plenty sharp. Colors are vivid and the display gets nice and bright, with sharp visuals.HD videos played back on the GALAXY Tab 10.1 look amazing and practically pop off the screen.
Under the hood, the GALAXY Tab 2 10.1 is powered by a 1 GHz Dual-Core CPU and 1GB of ram. In general performance feels very peppy with barely any lags. And thanks to Android 4.0 and the dual-core processor, multitasking performance is better than ever. The Tab 2 earned a respectable score of 2474 in Quadrant, and 4784 in AnTuTu.
The GALAXY Tab 2 10.1 comes preloaded with plenty of useful apps like AllShare, Netflix, a Photo Editor, and Polaris Office with support for viewing and editing Powerpoint, Word and Excel files, and more. The Tab 2 also comes with 50GB of free DropBox storage for a year, this is a $99 value.
Samsung’s TouchWiz U.I. is also running over Android 4.0. It adds neat widgets and apps to Android, along with apps like Samsung’s Readers Hub, Music Hub, Game Hub, and more.
The GALAXY Tab 2 10.1 can be also used as universal remote thanks to its built-in IR function. This is a very convenient feature that more anymore tablets are starting to offer. Samsung has also preloaded Peel, a pretty slick smart remote and TV listing app that takes advantage of the universal remote function.
Unfortunately the GALAXY Tab 2 10.1′s 3MP rear-facing camera is nothing to write home about, but it’s a decent tablet camera. The Tab 2 also sports a VGA front-facing camera for video chats.
Having a decent set of built-speakers is unfortunately so often overlooked in other tablets. Fortunately, when it comes to playing back multimedia, the GALAXY Tab 10.1′s built-in dual speakers are able to get nice and loud without distortion.
While the Samsung GALAXY Tab 2 10.1 doesn’t offer much cutting edge tablet features, it proves to be a well rounded Android 4.0 tablet offering. Users will appreciate its attractive and relatively lightweight form-factor, its capable performance, excellent display, and its convenient IR function. All in all, in a market flooded with way too many Android tablets, the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 manages to impress, which is no easy feat.
The GALAXY Tab 2 10.1 is available in a choice of white or black. The Tab 2 also attempts to compete with the iPad 2′s pricing, with a starting price of $399 for the 16GB model. Fortunately, the Tab 2′s storage can be also expanded via microSD.
