"The co-branded devices will combine popular Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 hardware with customized Nook software to give customers powerful, full-featured tablets that are designed for reading, with easy access to Barnes & Noble’s expansive digital collection of more than three million books, leading magazines and newspapers." (Indeed, you can pick up a copy of PC Advisor at the Nook store.)
Samsung and Barnes & Noble call the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Nook "the first ever Android tablet optimised for reading". By combining Samsung's tablet tech with B&N's Nook software the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Nook offers the best of both worlds.
If this 7in version is successful, a 10in version could potentially come next.
Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Nook release date UK
A Samsung and Barnes & Noble joint event announcing the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Nook was held in New York on 20 August.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Nook is expected to hit the shop shelves immediately, and Barnes & Noble will sell it through its own stores and e-shop in the US.
It has yet to be confirmed whether the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Nook will make its way to the UK, although we see no reason why it shouldn't. We'll update you on this as soon as new details emerge.
Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Nook price UK
The standard Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 costs £159, and we fail to see why adding Nook software to it would bump up the price - it hasn't in the US. Instead, B&N is offering a generous free content bundle with the device.
Over in the US the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 costs $179; the Tab 4 Nook also costs $179 and comes with more than $200 of free content and a free trial subscription to four magazines, making it the better deal.
Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Nook specs
The Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Nook runs Android KitKat, but is optimised for book lovers with B&N's Nook software. It continues to offer full access to Google Play. It will offer daily personalised recommendations, and offers access to more than three million books, including children's titles. B&N will also offer movies and TV shows through its portal.
Barnes & Noble will also offer in-store support for the life of the device, and can provide tips on using the Tab 4 Nook as well as what to read or watch next.
The Tab 4 Nook has the same spec as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4, a 7in-screen tablet with a 1280x800-pixel resolution and 16M colours. It runs on a 1.2GHz quad-core processor with 1.5GB of RAM and 8GB of storage, plus support for MicroSD (up to 32GB).
The Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Nook features a 3Mp rear camera and 1.3Mp front-facing webcam, with the former capable of 720p video recording at 30fps. This is the first time a Nook device will have front- and rear cameras.
Connectivity stretches to dual-band 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4, Wi-Fi Direct, GPS and Glonass.
The Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Nook measures 186.9x9x107.9mm and weighs 276g. Part of this weight comes from the 4000mAh battery, claimed to allow for up to 10 hours of video, 190 hours of audio, or 10 hours of internet usage. However, running a custom version of Android rather than standard KitKat these figures could be affected.
