Samsung’s new Gear S2, which comes with a circular design, is in attendance at IFA in Berlin, giving us an opportunity to go hands on with the new wearable. There have been a lot of big Android Wear announcements this week, including the new Moto 360 and Huawei Watch, but Samsung’s device might actually be the surprise standout. It’s going to be a tough call going into the busy holiday season.
There are actually three different versions: the Gear S2, Gear S2 classic and a Gear S2 with 3G, allowing consumers to use the watch as a standalone device. Samsung has tested the 3G-equipped smartwatch waters before, but the Gear S2 is a device you’ll actually want to own. And it’s not just because the design is top notch; the Tizen UX, which is like a cross between Android Wear and Apple’s watchOS, looks like a genuine contender.
The other thing of note is the Gear S2’s rotating bezel, which lets users navigate the software without swipes and taps and difficult digital crowns. We’re curious to see how well the mechanism holds up over a longer period of time, but so far it feels substantial and thoughtfully crafted, making for an enjoyable experience.
You can check out the full spec sheet below. Oh, and before you scamper off, know that the Gear S2 will be compatible with devices running Android 4.4 and up, which means this isn’t a Samsung-only affair. Now we’ll just have to wait and see if it makes its way to iOS.
