There is no doubt that virtual reality (VR) is the next ‘Big Thing,’ and is one of the reasons that Samsung teamed up with Facebook-owned Oculus to develop their own device – the Samsung Gear VR headset…introduced last year for its Galaxy Note 4 and Note Edge headsets. This year Samsung introduced a slightly modified version for its new Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge smartphones with minor tweaks and changes. This new version was to be available in Canada on July 17, however, it looks like Best Buy decided to release the Gear VR Innovator Edition for the Galaxy S6 (SM-R321) in white a few days early.
The Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition for Galaxy S6 can be purchased for $249.99, which includes free shipping. It cannot be reserved in-store, so this leads us to believe that the product cannot be purchased directly in the stores – our source is reaching out to Best Buy to find out the details. This price obviously does not include the Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge as that would be a separate purchase. Certainly not as cheap as the ‘cardboard headsets,’ Samsung’s Gear VR includes built-in head tracking, which supposedly makes for a better experience, along with a sturdier plastic construction.
Gear VR Innovator Edition for the Galaxy S6/S6 Edge transforms your reality, according to Best Buy. You simply snap your Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge smartphone into the Gear VR headset and you are ready to go – watching videos or gaming in an incredibly new way. The Samsung Gear VR is built on the Oculus VR technology and when combined with Samsung’s Super AMOLED QHD display it creates a beautiful 96-degree field of view – it is like looking on a wide stage that is wrapped around you. It can be used for games, photos or movies giving you a realistic 2D or 3D experience. The Gear VR’s virtual display is the equivalent of viewing a 175-inch screen.
You can easily control your Gear VR with smart, dedicated controls, such as built-in touchpad navigation and a dedicated back button to exit the menus easily to get you back to the beginning. It also includes an integrated anti-fog system always allowing you a clear view and the balanced headband setup keeps fatigue to a minimum. Also available is a wide range of content through Oculus Cinema, 360º videos, and 360º photos, along with a long list of 3D action titles in gaming. The future looks very bright for the field of VR and Samsung definitely wants in on the action.
