There were many devices unveiled at this year’s MWC at Barcelona. The South Korean company’s Galaxy S6 stole the spotlight from everyone and Samsung are counting on this product to be a big hit. Last year the Korean company had it really bad as they lost a lot of market share to Apple and the Chinese companies.
Apple made bigger phones and people started to think that why not go for the more stable phones with the bigger screens. We know Android phones encounter problems now and then and the Apple products and their OS is very reliable and stable. This is why a majority of the market shifted towards Apple. Even people in China who had cheaper smartphones at their disposal went for the iPhone 6 and 6+. So this year’s flagship launch is the most important one for Samsung.
Samsung’s co-CEO JK Shin and Samsung’s head of mobile marketing Younghee Lee, sat down with a South Korean journalist. Some questions were asked from the Samsung officials about the design and the new problems they might face in the future. The first question asked by the journalist was about the Galaxy Note Edge. The journalist asked them whether Samsung had a concrete plan of expanding usability to which Shin answered that that they are planning to capitalize on the fact that Samsung Note Edge is formed using flexible display.
Shin continued and said that it is still in its early stages but they plan to open their own SDK and API so that they can put more features on the edge. Shin believes that the Galaxy S6 Edge will have more features in the future and it will have a much stronger start when compared with the Note Edge. The design of the Galaxy S6 Edge was very good when compared with the previous model. The Samsung officials are hoping they will sell more units of the S6 Edge.
Another question the journalist asked the Samsung official was about the Chinese vendors and how they sometimes copy Samsung designs. To which Shin once again answered that there is a sentiment more or less in the industry. He said that his company tries to make futuristic designs and never copies which makes his company standout from the rest. He also said that Samsung uses construction methods which are difficult to copy for other companies. He also said that Samsung’s manufacturing and quality has been the best in the industry for quite some years now.
The South Korean journalist asked the officials why the new S6 Edge has fewer features when compared with the Note Edge. Younghee Lee replied and said that the edges of the both phones take up different spaces and serve different purposes. He also said that they tried to include the Note Edge features to the S6 Edge.
He said that the company took pros and cons from the Note Edge and only added the optimized features to the new Galaxy S6 Edge. He also said that the company has put in a lot of personalization on the new phone. Now you can choose five contacts that will show on the edge. He said that these features are all very intuitive and are quite different to those on the Note Edge.
The journalist went on and asked them about design similarities between their phone and the iPhone 6. Younghee Lee dismissed the claims that Samsung Galaxy S6 looks similar when compared with the new iPhone. He said that their phone has deeper color tones. He also said that their phone has a different texture and durability.
The journalist asked them about their attack on Apple at Unpacked. Younghee Lee said that they wanted to send a short and crisp strong message. His company tried to make a strong impact in the shortest time frame. He said that comparing the power of cameras and durability got the point across easier to Apple.
The next question which was asked by the journalist was about their demise in China. Samsung faced difficulties in China because it fell behind Apple. Shin said that with the release of the S6 and S6 Edge, they are expecting to gain a lot of market share in the high end market segment. They started offering pre-orders just after the Unpacked event. They are expecting to have a better start than last year’s Galaxy S5.
The new Galaxy S6 phone will go on sale on April 10th and Shin claims it will be better than the previous year. The journalist finally asked them about their wearable device which comes with the S6 and S6 Edge. Shin said that they decided to put aside the wearables for the MWC because there was too much talk regarding them. Shin said that they will release a wearable but in due time. For now they want to focus on the sales of S6 and S6 Edge.
