At the Spring Forward event, Apple introduced the “New MacBook”, which is Apple’s thinnest and lightest Mac yet. The new MacBook provides an all new model line that sits in between the MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro. The device comes in at a new 12” form factor that offers a Retina display with a resolution of 2304 x 1440 for a starting price of $1299. The new MacBook offers a whole new form factor that is 13.1 mm, which is 24% thinner than the existing MacBook Air, and weighs just two pounds.
The New MacBook has a number of other new technologies including an all new Force Touch trackpad. The new trackpad can detect how much pressure you apply to the trackpad to activate all new force based gestures. In addition to sensing pressure, the new trackpad also provides haptic feedback to give users a vibration response to specific actions. The keyboard is also brand new with a new butterfly mechanism to replace the previous spring mechanism to offer more stable and precise keys with an individual backlight applied to each key. The keyboard still offers a full size layout with an edge to edge design that is thinner, while offering slightly more surface area.
On the inside, the new MacBook features the all new Intel Core-M processor that starts at 1.1GHz with Intel HD 5300 graphics, and runs at just 4.5 watts. It’s such a power efficient and small processor that the new Macbook offers a completely fanless design. Apple used the space savings to pack in the batteries with a new tapered battery style that delivers “all-day” battery life rated at nine hours of web browsing, and 10 hours of iTunes video playback. The new MacBook also includes just a single port in the form of USB-C, which supports power, USB data transfer, DisplayPort, HDMI, and VGA capabilities all in one. There’s only one port, so if you want to charge, plug in an accessory, and export your display, you need a $79 dongle.
The new MacBook will begin shipping on Friday April 10th with two model choices. There is the entry level with 256GB Flash storage, 8GB of RAM, and the 1.1GHz Intel Core M for $1299. There is also a 1.2GHz variant with 512GB of flash storage for $1599. The new MacBook also has three color choices of silver, space gray, and gold to align with the iPhone and iPad.
