It’s a tale of friendship and fish monsters, backpacks and conveyor belts, time travel and fishing poles used as grappling hooks. Sayonara Umihara Kawase, released as Yumi’s Odd Odyssey in the States, is a purely surreal and charming platformer on the Nintendo 3DS, and it will soon be getting an upgraded re-release on the PS Vita.
Sayonara Umihara Kawase: Chirari, as it has been subtitled, will boost the graphic resolution, allow it to be played in 60fps, rearrange enemy placement, and boost the level count to about 50 unique stages. The new version will be released in Japan next week.
To those who didn’t get to play it, Yumi’s Odd Odyssey was one of 2014′s most criminally overlooked games. I don’t blame anybody for not snagging it up considering Natsume sent it out to be slaughtered at a $29.99 price tag, but it’s never too late to climb aboard. It can sometimes be picked up on sale for $9.99, and I highly recommend that you do so!
Don’t take my word alone for it. Maybe you should seek out the Super Famicom original, Umihara Kawase, and play it. It’s a masterpiece of level design and one of the greatest 16-bit platformers that you never played, full of wonderful aesthetics, level design, music, and amazing grappling hook mechanics. The PlayStation sequel is also decent, but you could be forgiven for just playing the Super Famicom one.
Should you seek out this Super Famicom game ”by any means necessary,” since it will never get a localized release and there is no practical way to obtain it in the States or Japan even for that matter, then I would implore you to pay the money to support Natsume and Yumi’s Odd Odyssey. It’s not as pretty as the Super Famicom game, but it throws in a few extra gameplay modes and playable characters to make up for it.
No word yet if Natsume plans to release this PS Vita version yet. I doubt the Nintendo 3DS one did well enough to justify it, but maybe a more merciful price tag could be enough to get people to play this game.
