Normally we’d explain what this app is about, but in this case we’re going to let the developer do it for us: ‘Help Seal Force defeat evil krill mastermind Krillian from poisoning the sea!The entire ocean is counting on you to help defeat the evil krill mastermind Krillian from poisoning the sea !’ Aside from the repetition, not a bad effort. 4/5.
You control the Seal Force, namely Sarge, Milo and Fonzie in this horizontal scroller, as they aim to defeat the Krillian army and liberate the sea. All three seals can be controlled but only one at a time. The key to the game is matching the coloured enemy fish to the colour of each of our three protagonists. Only the seal matching the colour of the waves of fish can defeat them and, as you progress, you’ll encounter several different coloured fish advancing across the screen at once, so you have to prioritise each threat and make sure each attack counts.
And attacks are performed by drawing a line across the screen to your target, which your chosen seal will then follow. If you fail to draw the line accurately enough, your seal might not defeat all of the fish in each wave and have to make another pass, wasting precious time.
Upgrades are available to help you complete each of the 11 missions available and you need to collect as many shells as possible (while ensuring the Krillian army don’t ‘Krill’ you, ahem) to afford each upgrade. Hidden within each level are power-ups for each of the seals which give them increased durability and additional weapons to fight off the advancing Krillian army.
The problem with Seal Force is that the action is limited to drawing lines across the screen, which is at times at odds with the speed of the action taking place on screen. Arguably a more straightforward virtual d-pad setup would have improved gameplay.
Niggles aside, as free games go, Seal Force is a beautifully detailed and carefully crafted one, and we’d certainly recommend a viewing…
The Bottom Line
Horizontal scroller that’s arguably hampered by a novel control method. Worth a look, however.
