Imagine the Sisyphean ordeal of being shipwrecked on a mysterious island for seven seasons, surrounded by invisible monsters and strangers out to make you suffer, as you struggle with fellow survivor towards a savage anti-climax. That was LOST; thank the game gods this isn’t…
Yes, mercifully free from misplaced polar bears, plane crashes and perplexing plot holes, what we have here is a castaway caper of the colourful cartoon category. Okay, your maritime misadventure has caused you to end up somewhere called Lost Island, but that’s the only loose link to Locke and that lot you’ll have to endure in this civil little civilisation constructor.
Starting out with the basics, you’ll need to build shelter, work on a fresh water system, grow food and recruit fellow washed-up wastrels to stop lying around and help you clear the overgrowth to expand your area and complete tasks to earn essential experience… and even more essential coin if you fancy progressing any time soon.
Beautifully designed and animated, there’s an awful lot to do for you and your fellow ‘shippies’, and not just at camp either – with magical artefacts, lost civilisations and hidden treasure out there somewhere you’ll all keep busy. However, as is often the way with freemium apps of this ilk, tackling all these tasks takes time; and an awful lot of it when it comes to Shipwrecked. The answer is either to develop the patience of a LOST viewer or get your hand in your pocket and pay out for the gear to get the job done double-time.
THE BOTTOM LINE
Although we always expect the appearance of in-app purchases, the call for your coins comes rather quickly in Shipwrecked, resulting in that sinking feeling and some in-app-annoyance early on. An otherwise enjoyable experience, premature penny pinching aside, there’s plenty here to praise; and not a polar bear in sight…
