You might have taken the jump and went ahead and ordered a Nexus Player – congratulations, you will be one of the first few people to experience what Google wants for its Android TV market – but part of you is still not convinced at the casual gaming console aspect of the device. Games like Sky Force 2014 might just help push you over the line and have you ordering those ASUS game controllers soon.
Sky Force was destined to be a classic when it debuted in 2004. For those who played 1943 on the Nintendo Entertainment System (Famicom), Sky Force was a souped-up version of it. The problem was that mobile phones in 2004 were really not suited for casual gaming the way our current phones are. That aside, the game was a still a hit and was ported to Android and iOS, until the lack of updates caught up with it.
This year, the same studio – Infinite Dreams based in Poland – is bring Sky Force 2014 to Android TV, but don’t expect a port lazily rehashing the old game. Infinite Dreams has taken it upon themselves to do a top-to-bottom remake that reflects what we love about casual gaming in our times. But its familiar in a warm sort of way – Sky Force 2014 is still vertical-scrolling shoot-em-up that puts you in control of a ship and sends you through levels of enemies and big bosses.
