There are so many potential games, but it seems like we just keep seeing new versions of existing games. Skyline Skaters is a 2D side scrolling endless runner that puts your character on a skateboard, and lets you roll across rooftops. The game set-up is almost identical to TMNT: Rooftop Run, which in itself is a lot like Mirror’s Edge, Canabalt, and so many more. Not only is the gameplay familiar, but Skyline Skaters seems to go out of its way to fit into the Subway Surfers theme, possibly in an attempt to catch on to that popularity. The end result is a game that we have played before, but you have to give the developers credit for their monetization strategy.
Skyline Skaters offers the usual endless set-up, but with tons of ways to spend money whether it’s new boards, characters, power-ups, or upgrades. There’s also the infusion of video ads to earn upgrades, and you can always continue your run for higher costs. The developers tapped into every monetization strategy around, and packed them all into one game, but they missed the key ingredient to freemium. You have to make a game that’s worth coming back to, so that you can monetize continuing players. Skyline Skaters is such a bland, and familiar endless runner that there’s nothing new to see after a couple of runs. Also, there’s so much extra convoluted clutter that you just want to ignore it, and play.
The heart of the game is simple one touch controls allowing you to tap to jump, tap again to double jump while leaping over gaps, dodging missiles, and bouncing on robots. There’s a nice flow to the gameplay for plenty of action, but there’s not much challenge, and very little variety. Every run plays out almost identically, and it seems the.introduction of obstacles follows a very specific pattern for each run. One neat inclusion is the scoring system, which emphasizes collecting entire groups of coins, rather than just simply based on distance. There’s also a day/night cycle to change the setting based on when you play, but it’s still the same repetitive gameplay each time.
Skyline Skaters (Free, Universal) is one of the most well made vanilla additions to the App Store that I’ve seen. It’s surprising to see so much fit, and finish go into an overtly by the books creation that is one to steer clear of.
