GroupMe, the cross-smartphone group texting app, has been bought by Skype for an estimated $50 million. The move is expected to allow Skype to improve its features and services as well as expand across further smartphone OS platforms.
Despite its tender age of little over a year old, GroupMe is already available on Android, iOS, BlackBerry and Windows Phone 7 handsets. The free app’s coverage is likely to improve considerably however, since it now has access to Skype’s 175 million strong userbase.
Skype itself was purchased by Microsoft for a phenomenal $8.5 billion in May this year, meaning both the free VoIP telephony app and GroupMe are likely to be incorporated into future Windows products.
GroupMe is now free to download from the Android Market, as is Skype.
