Price comparison apps are nothing new. Some are good, some seem to be cobbled together during the five minute peak of a psychotropic narcotics binge but Skyscanner is a highly serviceable addition to the list. It promises to find you a cheap flight. It mostly succeeded in doing so during our tests. Here’s how…
While it is very hard to get excited about Skyscanner, it is quite easy to get excited about saving a shedload of money on your holiday. Money that can be spent on more trivial pursuits like booze, comedy hats and the overpriced ‘sea adventures’ offered by many a sunny resort.
The app works without any fancy gimmickry, a plus when the task you’re looking to get through is less than ‘wildly entertaining’. Enter in your desired destination and dates of departure and Skyscanner will trawl most major airlines to give you a rough idea of how much money you should expect to part with. Although there’s the option of booking your flights through a link to the Android Browser, we wouldn’t recommend doing that.
Several key airlines (easyJet, Ryanair, Qantus, Wizz Air) are missing from the app meaning short haul flights, especially to Eastern Europe, aren’t particularly well represented. For example, the cheapest return trip we were quoted to Zagreb, Croatia still ran up to £252. In stark contrast, a quick search online gave us a rough fee of £150.
For long haul flights, Skyscanner works pretty well. What’s especially good is the app’s ‘Chart function’ which tracks the average price of flights in the days surrounding your initial selection. Using this nifty widget you can pick and chose the best days for continent-hopping on a shoe string.
Overall, we reckon the best is still to come from Skyscanner. If a few more airlines are brought on board, this app’s user-friendly interface will provide a great hub for all your travel needs. For now it’s a useful holiday offering but some way off a necessary one.
The Bottom Line
Will save you money on flights in most cases, could do with including a few more airlines.
