Just one year after the launch of the analog land-grab board game, Small World, Days of Wonder released Small World for iPad, bringing the fantastically fun board game to the digital world. Soon after, the gaming company brought Ticket To Ride to the iOS platform, cementing its claim to best digital version of an actual board game, ever (ok, maybe that’s just me).
Secretly, however, Days of Wonder tasked a small group of developers with coming up with a bigger, better sequel to Small World. They’re now on Kickstarter, almost funded, and ready to bring the game to Android, iOS, and even Steam with the funds from the crowd-sourcing website.
This time, Small World 2 players won’t be restricted to just two, but will be able to take over the map with up to five players, each one with their own map, just like the actual board game. There’ll be new modes, beyond solo and 2-player face-to-face, with Pass ‘N Play, Local Play, and an actual turn-based asynchronous online mode (gasp!) that will let you play with folks across different platforms without having to do so in real time.
There will also be more races and special powers than in the original game, with some extra expansions (Be Not Afraid) added to the original Cursed! and Grand Dames expansions, all available for in-app purchase. All backers at the Tritons ($8) level and above will get the extra “Kickstarter Backer’s Bonus Pack,” which contains the exclusive set of three new races and three new special powers.
It is a small world, after all.
Even better? If the person who starts a multiplayer game owns one of the expansions, all people invited to the game, whether thy own the expansion or not, can play with it enabled.
Head on over to the Small World 2 Kickstarter page for all the details. Full disclosure: I just pledged $15 to get a copy of the game along with the Bonus Pack, because I love the original game on my iPad. The team is looking for $150,000 in pledges, and has over $120,000 as of this writing (and still 26 days to go), so kick in if you support a new version of Small World 2 on Android, iOS, and even Steam.
