If you’re in possession of an Android smartphone running on an unlimited text plan then we may have the app for you. Smozzy is a free app which packages communications between your Android browser and the internet as text messages, allowing completely cost free Web access.
The magic happens over at the Smozzy server which chops up a Web page, zips each piece, packages the zip files as PNGs, and sends the faux image files via MMS. The app unpacks the files and reassembles the Web page. Complicated but hugely impressive stuff.
At present the app is in beta and only works through the US T-Mobile network, if it gets expanded across other mobile operators it could be very impressive indeed. If you happen to live in the land of stars and stripes and are on T-Mobile however, it’s worth bearing in mind the app’s lack of encryption before you go online banking on the cheap.
