Yesterday we told you that the upcoming Sony smartphone codenamed Odin will be launched as the Xperia X. The Xperia X and the Xperia Z (codenamed Yuga) share most of their rumored specs, though, so we assumed one was going to be sold in some parts of the world, and the other elsewhere – a rehash of this year’s story with the Xperia Ion and Xperia S.
However, new ‘evidence’ in the form of yet another rumor has surfaced, and it looks like that may not be the case after all. That’s because it turns out that the Xperia X could just be a dual-SIM version of the Xperia Z.
According to a ‘reliable source’ that spoke to a Vietnamese forum administrator (hey, we didn’t say this was anything more than a rumor!), the Xperia X (Odin) will be thicker and heavier than the Xperia Z (Yuga). It will also come with a different design on the back – a ‘rough’ texture with stripes reminiscent of those seen on the Xperia E Dual but subtle and sharper. Contrast this to the Xperia Z’s sleek, shiny, mirrory (if that’s even a word) plasticky back.
Further, the X should come with a front-facing camera located at the bottom of the screen, and not the top as every other secondary smartphone camera ever made. This may be plain wrong (as it sounds pretty weird), or it could be that Sony feels like experimenting with better angles for video calls – we’ll have to wait and see. Anyway, you may be happy to find out that the light sensor is still going to be found above the display, and not below where your finger may adversely affect its readings.
A part of the Xperia X’s back will in effect be a removable cover, under which will sit two SIM card slots and one microSD slot, allowing for hot-swapping.
The Xperia X apparently won’t be water and dust proof like the Xperia Z, by the way.
All of the information above supposedly comes based on some hands-on time with an Odin prototype, so some things may have changed in the latter stages of development. And there’s also the possibility that this rumor doesn’t pan out.
That said, Sony will almost certainly unveil both the Yuga and the Odin during CES next month, so we’ll know all the official details then. And in the meantime, we’ll bring you all the new rumors and leaks as they occur.
