While manufacturers gear up to update some of their devices to Android 5.0 Lollipop, many are still working on upgrading older handsets to Android 4.4.4 KitKat.
On Tuesday, November 4, Sony officially confirmed that not only the Xperia Z2 will be receiving an update to Android 4.4.4 beginning on the same day, but so will the Xperia Z2 Tablet. Sony calls this the “Sony User Experience upgrade,” and it packs in quite a few new features for anyone who is still holding on to the older handset. The high-profile new feature, though, is Sony’s PS4 Remote Play feature, which will allow owners to play PlayStation 4 games streamed to the handset, just like the Xperia Z3 lineup.
Other new features being tossed into the mix include Ultra Stamina Mode, Hi-Res Audio support, Xperia Camera apps and more:
PS4 Remote Play with full DualShock 4 controller compatibility
Hi-Res Audio support for PCM and DSD files, Sony DSEE HX tech in Walkman app that’ll improve the sound of MP3, AAC and Music Unlimited tracks
Xperia Camera apps like Sound Photo, AR Fun, Multi Camera and Face In
Newest version of Battery Stamina Mode as well as Ultra Stamina Mode, the latter of which will make a fully-charged Xperia Z2 last more than a week in standby
Quick Settings includes Smart Screen Rotation, Record Screen for recording a video of your display
Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z2 Tablet will unlock when near SmartBand, SmartBand Talk or SmartWatch 3 thanks to Bluetooth Unlock feature
While the update is set to begin at any time, the rollout will depend on the region and carriers involved, so it could take some time before owners get the update notification.
