Much as expected, the implications of SOPA and PIPA – two controversial bills to be passed in the Congress – are far-fetching. It is quite obvious that these would curb off the freedom of the internet, which is the most vital aspect of Internet! Taking freedom off what is said on Internet would merely let the governments control the content on the Internet. As such, these two bills have generated enough controversy and the implications being very serious, top companies and institutions have joined hands to campaign against this bill.
Google, Wikipedia, Tumblr, Facebook and a host of other websites have been publicly campaigning against this Bill.
SOPA Impact on iPhone Jailbreaking
There’s some bad news for Apple iDevice users too. For those of you wishing to jailbreak, or having a jailbroken phone, it would be illegal to jailbreak or to have a jailbroken phone! That’s the worst implication SOPA can have on the smartphone!
@p0sixninja, a prominent member on the Chronic Dev Team, tweeted about it just recently. He said that distributing jailbroken softwares would become illegal. For those of you who do not know it yet, although jailbreaking is unethical in Apple’s perspective, it is a legal activity according to present US laws. No one can charge you if you were found distributing jailbreaking softwares, apps etc. Apple, whose business gets affected because of jailbreaking, however would void the warranty on the jailbroken iDevice. That’s as far as it can get for the moment.
But with SOPA coming in, things will change. SOPA would make jailbreaking illegal – but more than that, distributing such software and app would become even more so. Websites involved in jailbreaking would be completely shut down – and those talking about it, supporting it, and providing information about it – like us – would also be shut down!!
Let’s get this straight first: a jailbreak does not harm the iPhone naturally. It’s only the type of apps we choose to install on a jailbroken phone that can cause any harm. Quite naturally, jailbreaking is merely a breaking of limitations that are just pointless most of the time. Jailbreaking allows users to use the iPhone, modify the settings and get apps that aren’t available on the App Store – all activities looking perfectly legal!
Jailbreaking going illegal, it would not be possible to know how to jailbreak a device. Furthermore, it would become impossible to even proclaim that you have jailbroken a device! Suspicious activity, eh?!
