Space Guru is an innovative puzzle app set in space where you’re tasked with keeping galatic order by fusing suns together. Trippy huh? It’s the first app from a talented young developer named apesoup so don’t go expecting a note-perfect offering but for a free download of an offbeat creation, this gets our thumbs up.
When we say Space Guru is crazy, we mean it.
“This game is for everybody who appreciates the beauty of the universe and takes pleasure in the idea of being a natural force beyond science; a force that fuses suns in the early universe to fulfil a mission of utmost importance,” claims its Android Market spiel. No we didn’t understand either…
Once you crack into this app’s 48 levels however, all begins to make sense. Your basic goal is to fuse suns of varying colours to clear the screen in front of you. Some colours mix together, some don’t and if try to mix the wrong suns, they’ll become unstable and up costing you the level. Still with us? Good because persistence is key here.
While initially difficult to grasp, and fairly tough to play too, Space Guru is worth the time and effort you’ll invest into it. Once you’ve understood what’s going on, it’s a refreshingly fiendish app with even early levels requiring a fair amount of strategy and concentration. As a result, clearing a galaxy feels like a real achievement rather than the inevitable result of your persistence.
As is to be expected from an indie developer, Space Guru’s graphics are fairly rudimentary but they do the job clearly and effectively. The app also includes a welcome statistics section which charts the ‘goals’ you have accomplished over the course of the app and what settings you’ve unlocked through your insane space skills.
Although Space Guru is a flawed gaming experience, we like it quite a bit. It’s ambitious and offers a concept that’s different to a lot of the guff peddled on the Android Market. With a little more polish, it could have been brilliant. As things stand, it’s merely good.
The Bottom Line
Lacks the polish of a must-have title but compensates in charm and innovation.
