Space Physics is an Android puzzle app with a difference. Rather than use the tools in front of you to complete each challenge, you’ve got to employ your smartphone’s touchscreen to draw a series of shapes that will help you beat any obstacle. While it may not get everything spot on, this app’s endearing sense of inventiveness never ceases to bring a smile to our haggard faces.
Choice has often a proved dangerous thing in technology. In Grand Theft Auto, it boils down to the freedom to kill innocent bystanders and get away with it. In Spotify, listeners have a library nearly all the world’s music to stream from and yet still plump for the hits of Lady Gaga and Rihanna by a huge majority.
In Space Physics, you’re handed the opportunity to solve each puzzle by drawing any shape you can think of. This is a good thing because, especially when it comes to the games later levels, there are several ways to solve a level. It’s sometimes a bad thing, when you don’t know if your success is down to luck or design.
Drawing an object usually boils down to drawing one long line in the shape you require. Circles are meant to show up if you draw something reasonably round but this didn’t really work that well during the time we were reviewing the app. Whatever bizarre structure you do concoct will be used to transport a ball until it touches a cog.
The whole experience is a bit like Apparatus, except instead of some clean 3D graphics you get a neon sheen that garishly glosses over everything. Also while Apparatus had a fixed set of tools, you could do more with them.
Ultimately, Space Physics’ puzzles are compelling enough to smooth out its creases and with 80 puzzles to play through, you’ll be playing this app til Christmas comes if you download it today.
