Face it, real assistants, although desirable, are deeply flawed by such terribly human elements as mood swings, the requirement for financial remuneration, and – the ultimate failing – their own mortality. So why waste your time worrying about emotion, award or existence entropy? Get assisted by Android…
This is Sam, a fully customisable virtual assistant from the developers at the – all-in-the-name – Speaktoit. And by “fully customisable” I mean that Sam can be male or female, sport a range of haircuts/colours, skin hues, clothing and, of course, voice options, meaning that your own Sam selection can be anything from a swarthy looking chap to, say, a foxy little blonde lady in a slinky black gown; as mine is.
And it’s nice to have such aesthetic options as, although you would never even think of hiring an assistant based on such shallow, demeaning criteria in real life interview scenarios, this is not real life, so no fat chicks! But then again, just as with a paid sycophant made of meat, no matter how easy on the eye they may be, if they can’t walk the walk then they’re not fulfilling their raison d’être. Which is why the options offered by Speaktoit are attractive all-round.
Named among the New York Times’ Top 10 Android apps of the Year in 2012, this virtual assistant uses natural, rapid response, smooth flowing language technology to deliver the results to any question thrown at it within seconds. Whether you need facts, maps, music or, well, you get the idea, to set schedules or to open apps automatically and keep you sorted on the social media scene and appraised of email, Speaktoit rises to the task time and again in a manner most others of its ilk simply can’t.
THE BOTTOM LINE
The most flexible, intuitive and pleasing of the countless virtual assistants I’ve tested over the years (and across the platforms), pay the extra to upgrade to the Premium subscription option and have Sam at your service long after the name Siri has faded into obscurity.
