If you’ve ever harboured a secret ambition to become a fireman or just like the idea of shooting water out of a giant cannon, then Sprinkle may well be the Android app for you. A puzzle app with a neat water-themed trick, for what this download lacks in originality, it overcompensates in charm and graphical gloss.
There’s no shortage of projectile based puzzlers clogging up the Android Market. Imagine an exotic animal and we guarantee you there’ll be an app where you can topple over an ill-balanced stack of objects with it. For this reason, Sprinkle is both a fairly innovative and extremely derivative download.
Within the bloated mini-genre of throwing one object at another, the idea of squirting water at your target is a novel one. We imagine it hasn’t been done before because of the graphical polish required to capture H20 in a semi-realistic form. In this respect, Sprinkle lives up to its somewhat boastful title by rendering great splashes of blue liquid in an enjoyably cartoon fashion.
The puzzles themselves are much less refreshing with the standard practice of firing at a target being prolonged by the necessity of holding your aim until all flames have been erased from your screen or your reservoir of water runs dry. Things are a little bit different, since you’ll often have to manage the flow of water towards certain outposts which are burning away from your immediate reach, but otherwise Angry Birds fans will know the drill.
That’s not to say that the puzzles themselves aren’t particularly challenging or that Sprinkle’s overall aesthetic of cute blue creatures and their staggeringly flammable huts isn’t very well done. It’s just that we’d rather be playing something genuinely new rather than new within its niche.
If you’ve not yet had your fill with the formula behind Sprinkle, then you’ll find this a polished app with buckets of playability. Alas, we have.
The Bottom Line
A good looking Android puzzler which is lacking in true innovation.
