When it comes to consumer electronics like smartphones and other mobile devices, they’re relatively safe, as they go through plenty of testing before the manufacturing process begins to crank out products. Every once in a while though there is a case where something goes wrong and the phone may end up overheating, causing significant and irreparable damage to the phone and potentially other items. While instances of devices catching fire or otherwise partially melting due to the extreme heat building up inside are very few and far between, they do seem to happen, as it appears to have been the case with a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus that reportedly caught fire back at the end of April.
Today, we’ve received a tip from a reader that claims a similar instance has happened with a Sprint model Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, although unlike the previous example, this device was apparently not on the charger at the time of catching on fire. It is worth noting, though, that the device is said to have been on the charger shortly beforehand and that it was not a third-party or generic unit, but rather the charger that came in the box with the device (which is said to have been purchased brand-new from Sprint). It was also mentioned that the phone was removed from the charger due to reaching excessively warm temperature levels, at which point the phone was left on the bed where it was sitting during the charging process. This led to part of the bedding catching on fire as well according to the individual who the phone belonged to, which you can see from the picture below.
While there is no way to know if there was some issue with the device and the components inside, the battery, or the charger, the nature of this particular phone having a problem of this type should cause alarm even if only on a small level. It’s worth pointing out of course, that this isn’t an issue which seems to be happening with tons and tons of devices, so you shouldn’t immediately worry that your device will end up doing the same thing. The individual states that they have contacted both Sprint and Samsung about the issue but there was no mention of having heard back from either company so far. Although the images below appear to be genuine, it’s good to keep in mind that there is no way for us to confirm them.
