Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness is turning out quite nicely, and both Square Enix and tri-Ace want to see the series return to full form. To aid in that task, both companies have decided to bring back what is (debatably) the best and most popular entry in the cult-JRPG, Star Ocean: The Second Story, to the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita.
Producer Shuichi Kobayashi made the announcement during a Tokyo Game Show 2015 streaming event, and he claims that this new version will not be a remake, but rather, a port of the PSP version Star Ocean: Second Evolution. I have not played this version, but from what I can see from screenshots and gameplay videos, it is almost a direct port with a few changes to aspect ratio and the overworld graphics.
Fans have been calling for a digital re-release of either the PSOne Classic or PSP remake on PSN since it has only ever been released physically, but naturally, Square Enix would rather make a few touches and upload it for full price. Some things never change, I guess. I doubt it even supports cross-buy!
Oh well, at least it is coming. Star Ocean: The Second Story is a wonderful game loaded with friendly characters and a high octane battle system. It’s been a while since I blasted through it, so I’m looking forward to another chance.
No release date has been set yet, but Kobayashi says it “won’t take too long.”
