When Apple first released the iPhone back in 2005 it came with storage of 4Gb, 8Gb, and 16Gb. Most people figured out that even 16Gb was not enough to hold all of your apps, photos, music, and videos. Even today’s iPhone with up to 128 Gb of storage can feel a bit tight when using it to do all that it can do. That is where online cloud storage comes in. You can save some of the files you want to delete from your phone but not delete permanently to the cloud and then remove them from your device’s storage. XXL Box is one such app that allows you to handle that with ease and it comes with a great many features that I didn’t consider when i first started using it. So here’s a brief look at XXL Box!
Once you’ve created your account and logged into the app you log into the “Libraries” screen. Along the bottom of the screen are 4 icons for Libraries, Starred, Activities, and Settings. Libraries brings you back to the Libraries screen. Starred shows you all the items you have starred for whatever reason. So if there’s a photo of your friend’s car that you really like you can star it and see it on that page quickly. The Activities icon takes you to a screen that shows you a log of all of your activities so you can recall what happened to that file you accidentally deleted when you were drunk last Saturday night! And finally the settings icon takes you to a settings screen showing you your user name and space used. There are also toggle switches for “auto camera upload” and “wifi only”. There’s a local cache setting of 1MB which you can wipe from the settings page as well. And of course there’s a link to the xxlcloud.com website so you can tell your friends about XXL Box as well. As far as the interface goes that’s about it. It’s pretty straightforward and easy to understand right from the start.
So what do you get when you use XXL Box for your cloud storage. Why should you use it over some of the other choices out there? Features of the app include the following:
2 GB of free storage but use the coupon code on their iTunes page for 10Gb free for life.
Automatic photo and video uploads
Sharing of links to your files with people or groups w/o the use of email attachments
Folders for easy grouping of files.
You can view photos, videos, and other files stored on other devices.
Stay in sync with friends, family, and co-workers by syncing up your XXL Box libraries
Files can be shared between all your devices
So as you can see there are a nice array of features that make XXL Box useful. I would say this is why you should at least check it out as an option for your online cloud storage. However nothing is perfect. There was one thing I didn’t like about this app. Once I uploaded my files I realized I would like to put them in a folder. I created a folder and moved them. Then i checked into that folder and didn’t see any files there so I repeated the steps again, thinking maybe I did something wrong. Once again I checked and the folder was empty. Hmm what could be the issue here? Then I pulled down and “REFRESHED” the folder and found that now I had 2 sets of files in the folder. My original moved files and a copy of the the files I moved the second time…Ugh! So basically the one problem I found here is that the app has a problem with automatically refreshing after an action has been performed. I had the same problem happen to me when I starred a photo in my Memes folder. I starred it and checked the stars section and didn’t see anything there. Once I refreshed that page it showed up. So to sum it up…fix the auto refreshing and I’m giving it 5 stars all day. Until them it’s a 4 star app! That being said I don’t think this should prevent anyone from checking out the XXL Box app. I highly recommend this app to anyone looking for an easy to use, simple, free cloud storage app!
