Monkeys are easily the best, most flexible animals on the planet. They come in countless delicious varieties and can even be brass, Arctic or, like me, Northern. So what better than a game of skill that involves propelling the hairy scamps around six surreal Japanese worlds? That’s right Super Monkey Ball is now available on Android!
The game’s premise is simple enough: take your chimp of choice, stick it in a hamster ball and bowl it around the 125 themed stages as quickly as possible, using nothing but your smartphone’s accelerometer, dodging obstacles and grabbing bananas as you go, oh and desperately trying not to fly off the course into ape oblivion.
On top of that comes four mini-games: Monkey Target, Monkey Golf, Monkey Bowl and (tablet only) Monkey Base where you can play with up to three friends, offering all the monkey magic you can handle.
THE BOTTOM LINE
However, as simple as the basis may be, the gameplay itself is surprisingly challenging and you’re bound to make more than a few howlers as you race to become chimply the best. So, poor primate puns apart, whilst this beautiful looking, fluidly playing game is undoubtedly more fun than a barrel full of the proverbial, if your reactions are anything less than razor sharp, this may not be the simian-based app for you.
It’s also worth mentioning that the game requires a 585MB additional download after opening, so don’t expect to be able to jump straight into the action either. But once you are up and rolling, Super Monkey Ball 2: Sakura Edition is nothing but good old fashioned, addictive entertainment and possibly the best £2.30 you’ll spend today.
