The platformer genre is a classic, and it seems that allows for new games to call back that classic mode more than other genres. Super Phantom Cat is a new iOS platformer that is heavily inspired by the past to deliver a familiar style in a new age package. The game features the classic elements of jumping on enemies, collecting stars, pounding blocks, finding hidden areas, and more. Super Phantom Cat takes many cues from Super Mario Bros 3, and that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It still feels like a fresh new challenge with the level design, pacing of enemies, and the inclusion of new abilities.
Super Phantom Cat features five unique worlds with each one filled with different challenges. The main game is hopping around, but you can pick up a bullet sprite to blast things, or a smash sprite to slam down on things. Each ability is geared towards a particular level to open up the path forward. One of the best parts of Super Phantom Cat is the age old style of actually having to search for the three stars that aren’t on the beaten path, and require active looking with the abilities. The Phantom Cat of the title is actually based on an invulnerability power you get if you die numerous times on a given level, and it’s a bit out of place in the scheme of the game.
Super Phantom Cat nails the classic platformer idea, and still stands alone as a present day built for iOS challenge. The on screen buttons allow for seamless control of your character, and that lets you perform the hopping maneuvers that are required. The game has a nice polished design with bright colors with the changing worlds. Super Phantom cat doesn’t go about reinventing the wheel, and instead makes a refined and focused wheel for today’s standards. The game does trend a bit towards the simple side, and the levels are made for on the go gaming for relatively short stretches. That’s part of the design, and it fits with the colorful theme, and bright nature of the overall game.
Super Phantom Cat ($1.99, Universal) nails the classic platformer feel, and fits well on iOs making it well worth picking up.
