It’s tough to get excited about another matching game, but when it comes from the makers of the well-crafted Quell Memento and Highrise Heroes, you take notice. Swapperoo is a matching game that builds upon a familiar base to allow for many new challenges as you play through the 38 levels. The main game is about sending the colored arrows in the direction they’re pointing in to create a match of at least three. New tiles are introduced as you go including dots you can tap to disappear, skulls you have to clear before their countdown is over, and drills that cut through other tiles.
Each level features new objectives including matching specific colors, collecting down arrows, or clearing away AI tiles that move after each of your turns. The changing challenges keep the game fresh, and keep you actively engaged to keep matching from level to level. The game doesn’t rely on timers, combos, multipliers, or flashing lights, and instead emphasizes the puzzles. In addition to the main game mode, there are also 75 challenges that give you a limited number of moves to clear all of the tiles on the board. It all adds up to a methodical puzzle experience that is quite an experience as the boards change, and shift with each move and new level.
The style of Swapperoo isn’t completely brand new, but it’s fresh enough to get you into it. Once in, you get to experience the nice blend of familiar mechanics with fresh challenge for a particularly accessible iOS experience. There are more complex games in the App Store, but Swapperoo fits in its genre nicely, and excels there. The game features nice craftsmanship, and it’s easy to just get lost in the relatively relaxing gameplay.
Swapperoo ($0.99, Universal) is well worth picking up for a fresh, and finely polished matching challenge.
