Remember the time you were moving cities and realized halfway through packing – with the move deadline looming – that you had way too much stuff that could not be sold on Craigslist, could not be packed to go with you, AND would be a shame to just throw away because it was in great condition?
Or the time you were clearing out the garage and realized you have piles of baby stuff your kid is too old to use but is in good shape to throw away, yet it is too much of a hassle to try and sell.
You could donate it to a local charity or give it away on Freecycle.org of course but how much cooler would it be if you could actually swap it out for items you need, e.g. moving boxes or a trampoline?
Swappy was born out of just this need. Swappy is the barter system for us 21st century folks. It is an app that allows you to swap things you don’t need for things you do with people around you.
This is how it works. You download the app (iPhone or Android) and take a picture of your item. You upload the picture and add a value range. Swappy matches your item with suggested items of similar value that you like or decline anonymously. If you like an item and that item’s owner reciprocates, you can start up a conversation within the app and organize a swap.
There is no limit to the items you may swap – barring dangerous weapons or hazardous materials of course. Jewellery, clothes, cars, electronics, collectibles, sports and music items, gaming systems – pretty much anything.
Swappy connects you with your extended neighborhood. You can interact with fellow swappers as close or as far away as you want. Just select your distance range through geographical location tagging and once you’ve agreed on a swap, make the trade without the hassle of having to deliver the items by mail.
Fabio Caragliano, the founder, was inspired to build Swappy when he was moving to Australia from Italy and realized he had many things he didn’t need which could be of use to someone else.
“I wanted to find a solution for people looking to exchange their everyday unwanted items when I set out to create Swappy. Creating an online community to facilitate this simple exchange has really seemed to hit it off with our users.”
Fabio built this app along with two friends in Sydney, Sam Carigliano and Paul Comino. Simone Munzone, based in Italy, joined the team shortly after to help market the product.
Swappy currently has over 6000 downloads and was listed as one of the Best New Apps on App Store Italia.
