Problem #1: T-Mobile Galaxy S5 cannot add picture to text message
Bought the S5 new from the T-Mobile store a couple years ago. With the default text messaging service that came with the phone, I have always been able to attach a picture to a text and send it as one text. In the past 6 months, the text message doesn’t allow me to send a text with a picture. It only allows me to send a text then a picture. The picture that I attach from is the phone’s default “Gallery” that comes with the phone. Like I said,”I’ve always been able to send a text message and a picture together as one text instead of as two separate text messages. My phone’s operating system has been running really slow lately. Soft starting didn’t really help. So, today I did a “factory reset” on it. The O.S is running much faster now. However, it didn’t fix the messaging issue. Solution: Hi Kelmo. This is a known T-Mobile issue since last year. The only known workaround is by turning off VoLTE or by using a third party messaging app instead of the stock one. If you want to turn off VoLTE, here’s how:
Tap Phone > Keypad tab.
Tap More options > Settings.
Tap Call > Voice over LTE settings.
Tap Use VoLTE when available or Do not use VoLTE.
Problem #2: AT&T Galaxy S5 cannot install Android update
I have been trying to update my phone OTA for a long time now. It says there is an update available. I download it, I let the phone try to work its magic, then the update was “interrupted” it gets to 28% of the update then says “Update Failed”.
I have looked everywhere and I cannot find the newest firmware, but everyone seems to be running on at least 5.1.1. The only thing that I have ever done is open up the developer options but i haven’t rooted my phone (to the best of my knowledge. I have had the phone for a while).
I have reset my phone to factory settings, tried OTA and failed.
Downloaded Kies and it says I have the newest firmware, which I know is a lie.
The only thing I will say is that when I go to check for firmware updates, the AT&T Software Update ICON has a grey box with an exclamation point on it. What does all of this mean? Thank you in advance. — CW
Solution: Hi CW. The first thing that you should do is to ask AT&T if they have problems rolling out their Android updates to some phones. You can also inquire what the exclamation mark on their software update icon means.
The other things that you can do on your own includes wiping the cache partition and doing a factory reset. Below are the steps to do them:
How to wipe the cache partition of Galaxy S5
This procedure will wipe out all caches used by the previous system. If an outdated system cache is preventing the phone from installing a new one, this may be an effective solution.
Turn off the device.
Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key.
When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
Press the Power key to select.
When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
Press the Power key to restart the device.
How to do a factory reset on the Galaxy S5
Resetting an S5 to its factory settings is the fastest way to delete everything on the phone as well as a great troubleshooting step if you encounter an issue that may appear hard to resolve. Power down the Galaxy S5.
Press and hold the Volume up button, the Home button, and the Power button together until you see the Android on screen.
Use Volume down to highlight the wipe data/factory reset option and press the Power button to select it.
Use Volume down again to highlight Yes – delete all user data and press Power to select it.
Use the Power button to select Reboot system now.
When the S5 restarts it should be completely wiped and ready to set up again.
Problem #3: Galaxy S5 showing adds when photos are viewed via a computer
Just returned from a Mexican vacation and only used free Wi-Fi at my hotel only. Came home a few days ago and went to download my photos and noticed all these casino and game ads in my photo gallery. The strange thing is I can’t see them on my phone, only when I connect my phone to my computer.
I’m a photographer and use Adobe Bridge to download photos. I did not download any of the ads for fear it would corrupt my computer, but I can’t for the life of me figure out how to delete them.
At first I had 20 of them and now I have 45 this morning. I’m thinking it was the update for Solitaire Blast which I did when I returned home and these ads look like they were added to my phone then also.
I play the game off and on throughout the day. I deleted the game altogether (sad face) but still don’t know how to delete the pictures altogether and don’t know for sure that’s the problem. I did the soft reset with no results but wouldn’t expect that to make a difference. — Charrie
Solution: Hi Charrie. It’s possible that your phone may have been infected with an adware after tapping on a link or installing a third party application. The first thing that you want to do is to create a backup of all your important files (photos, videos, contacts, etc) and perform a factory reset. Doing so would wipe the phone clean.
Once the phone has been cleaned, you then want to be careful when visiting websites, tapping on ads or links, or more importantly, on installing applications. Viruses, malware, or adware are spread by some apps. Installing a malicious app can open your phone to more advertisement-supported software or viruses that may compromise your information. Make sure to stick to official apps only. Do not install games or any app that may come from a dubious developer. Try to see what others are saying about the app (reviews) before installing it.
Problem #4: Galaxy S5 flashlight app missing
The phone came with a flashlight app. I placed a link on most of the home pages so I’d have it handy in case of need. It’s disappeared in the “manage apps” section.
The 3 shortcuts are still on the pages and still work but I can’t make another shortcut because it disappeared
I cannot find the program. But it has to be there or the shortcuts wouldn’t work. I didn’t notice it gone until after AT&T did the update to Lollipop 5.
Still trying to upgrade to new one but only have 3G memory free and that must not be enough. Help! — Jerry
Solution: Hi Jerry. Missing shortcuts can sometimes be caused by operating system modifications, or by third party applications functions that specifically removes them. Try to re-install the flashlight app first to see if that will work. If the app is still intact and installed, the re-installation attempt would fail. Otherwise, just proceed with the installation and create another shortcut.
If you did install a third party application like a launcher prior to noticing the problem, make sure to check its settings to allow for shortcuts to be shown.
If nothing changes, don’t hesitate to restore the phone’s firmware settings to default by doing a factory reset.
Problem #5: Galaxy S5 Google apps not working
Hi there. It all started about a week ago with Google Play Store. I could open it, select a program, hit install and it would just spin and spin without ever finishing or sending me an error message. Now when I go to open the app i get some old school looking page where all I get is a black screen and at the top I have a back arrow, Play Store and then the search magnifier. Now it almost seems like it is all of my google related accounts: I cannot get my emails to load, I cannot save a bookmark and sometimes my bookmarks aren’t even there at all. When I go to sign into google sometimes it syncs no problem, but most of the time I get still signing in or sync error. I’ve gone through and disabled some apps that I don’t use and have never heard of especially since the update, anyway when I reboot my phone a lot of those apps are up and running again and some of them put on icon on my screen. IDK what the heck is going on, but I am sooo frustrated. I’m not very tech savvy so could you please help me. Thank you so much. — Anne
Solution: Hi Anne. First of all, you want to delete the cache and data of the apps involved. If there’s a bug in one of the apps that may prevent the rest of the Google-related apps to not work properly, doing this procedure may help. Just follow these steps:
Go to Settings.
Proceed to Applications.
Select Manage Applications.
Tap the All tab.
Choose the name of the app that has been going rogue.
From there, you will see the Clear Cache and Clear Data buttons.
If the problem remains after wiping the cache and data of non-working apps, make sure that you do a factory reset. Once you’ve done that, check how Google apps behave first. Make sure not to install any app yet before doing the test. This will help you determine if one of your third party applications is the problem.
Problem #6: Galaxy S5 won’t connect to the internet when no Wi-Fi is in range
My S5 will work perfect as long as I’m in my house, and close to the Wi-Fi!!! Once I go out my front door, here’s what still works: Phone, texting, and messenger but no INTERNET, i.e., If I want to look something up on Google, forget it…it’s not gonna happen. The other night I was in a restaurant and connected to their Wi-Fi , my phone showed I was connected, however, I tried to open Facebook, to post some pictures, nope, Face book wouldn’t open!
A few weeks ago I was looking for a friend’s house. I tried to open Goggle Maps, nope that wasn’t gonna open the short version, is I have no internet once outside my house….when I get back home, near the Wi-Fi modem, my phone goes crazy loading stuff up that it could be doing while I’m out!
So that’s it…no online internet once I 10 feet away from my front door!
Thanks DroidGuy!! I have unlimited data plan, and the box that says automatically switch between 2.4 Ghz and Wi-Fi is not checked per T-Mobile. They told me it doesn’t need to be checked! I’ve tried it both ways, checked and un-checked, it makes no difference!!! — Marlo
Solution: Hi Marlo. All Samsung Galaxy S5s have a feature called Smart Network Switch that automatically switches the connection to mobile data if Wi-Fi signal is weak or lost. This function is not turned on by default though so you have to manually turn it on. Here’s how:
Press the Apps button on the lower right hand side.
Tap Menu (the three-dot icon).
Tap Smart network switch to enable it.
If your phone continues to lose connection when out of Wi-Fi range, make sure to call T-Mobile to check whether or not there are any account- or billing-related issues that may prevent the phone from using their mobile data network. You also want to ask T-Mobile’s technical support team for assistance regarding any phone-related problems.
Problem #7: Galaxy S5 battery drain issue
Hi all. I have a problem with my Samsung Galaxy S5 and I’ve tried all of your advices… well, none worked.
Phone is one year old and I never had any problems with it. Yesterday it went ”dead”. Battery was on 70%, I didn’t use the phone approximately one hour and when I took it it was ”dead” – black display. I took out the battery and put it back – nothing happened, tried to turn it on – nothing, tried all possible combinations (Volume Up+Home+Power – at the same time…. etc) – again nothing. There are no signs – no vibration, led light… nothing.
I tried to charge it but led light didn’t even blink nor did display show that battery is charging.
In the morning I’ve took out battery and insert it in my daughter’s S5 and the battery from my phone was empty, which means that my phone somehow drained it. I’ve put my daughters battery (fully charged) in my phone and it drained it in two hours.
Any advice? What could go wrong? Thanks for your comments and suggestions. — Maja
Solution: Hi Maja. Did your phone work when you inserted your daughter’s battery but somehow drained it fast? If yes, then that means that your phone may have lots of apps working actively and in the background at the same time. Make sure that you get rid of unwanted or least used apps. One of the biggest reasons for fast battery drain issue is apps. Some may be poorly coded causing power management problems for the operating system; others may be designed to constantly contact remote servers for updates like most social networking and shopping apps do. Still, other apps may be virus carriers or had allowed malware to penetrate your phone’s defenses. In other words, you have to start clean and uninstall stuff. The easiest way to do that is by doing a factory reset. Please follow the steps above.
Make sure you don’t re-install apps that may be causing the problem. Try to observe the phone after a factory reset for 24 hours. Don’t install anything, just let the phone be. If the battery continues to drain fast even without apps, that means that there may be a hardware problem behind the trouble. Have the phone checked or replaced.
