Welcome to our August TabTimes Monthly, an overview of the best new tablets and tablet related technology news and reviews of the last month in the industry. Subscribers to our TabTimes Monthly newsletter will be familiar with what they see here, just be sure to sign up for our giveaway for a chance to win a new tablet each month.
I hope you enjoy some of our favorite news from July of 2016, and when you get through to the end, sign up for your chance to win one of the only AMOLED tablets around, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2.
I had teased last month that we were pushing forward with a new approach for TabTimes. Don’t worry, we’ll still be covering the best Android, iOS and Windows tablets, we’re simply ramping up the coverage, bringing in new writers and reviewers and adding ultrabooks to the mix. Perhaps you’ve already seen our coverage of the Macbook or a few other ultrabook and lightweight laptop pieces, we truly hope they bring you value.
We believe that ultrabooks are a crucial part of the mobile computing experience, and while our partner sites Android Authority, SoundGuys and VRSource have a focus on their respective segments, TabTimes was the best place for our team to explore this side of computing. With our favorite tablets adding physical keyboards to the mix, and packing specs that some laptops would be envious of, we’re excited to explore with you the world of ultrabooks.
Officially launching in the U.S. on July 11th, the new Huawei MateBook Windows tablet is an instant favorite around here. We explored our first impressions of the device last month, then took our time to really get to know it before pushing out our full review. I don’t want to spoil the review, but I will say that this is one of the best Windows tablets we’ve ever held in hand. That said, this two-in-one form factor is made to operate with a magnetically detachable keyboard, competing with convertible tablets like the Surface Pro 4 and iPad Pro, does it have what it takes to keep up?
Check out our full written review today, then keep tabs on the site, we’ll have a full video review coming soon!
With our new approach comes fancy new devices, while not brand spanking new, we’ve got the Apple Macbook 2016 12-inch ultrabook in house. Nirave spent a good month with this slim and light laptop before forming any opinions, aside from his first 48 hour impressions, of course. As a regular Macbook user, he had a few great things to say about this sleek device with a single USB Type-C port, but he had a few complaints as well, come check it out.
Stay tuned, we’ve got a full video review coming soon.
ASUS ZenPad Z8 review – this is what a new $250 tablet looks like
Please join me in welcoming Bailey Stein to our team. He’s been with us on Android Authority for a while, and we are stoked to have him join us for a review of the ASUS ZenPad Z8. As a new entry in the higher-end of the budget tablet segment, this LTE enabled, plastic-build tablet is proving a wonderful little companion to your more powerful computing devices. Look for it on Verizon for the time being.
Check out the review of the ASUS ZenPad Z8 and be sure to join the comments to let us know what you think of this new tablet. Video review is in the article and added below.
Tablet shootouts revisited – iPad Air 2, iPad Air, iPad mini 4, Nexus 9 and more
As we normally do, we’ve updated a few of our tablet shootouts this month. We like to revisit them when new software or devices launch that change our opinions of the tablets on hand. This month we revisited several iPad Air 2 comparisons, as well as the iPad mini 4 and Nexus 9. Bottom line, the iPad Pro 9.7 has had a major impact on the rest of the iPad line, drastically changing our perspective and the overall value of the tablets. As for that Nexus 9, well, it’s still around.
Revisiting yet another older piece, we’ve updated our list of the best apps and accessories to use your iPad as a second monitor for your PC. Best of all, some of these options go the other way as well, allowing you to use your iPad to control your PC. If you are into that sort of productivity, go check it out.
With the potential for the iPad mini 4 going by the wayside in a few months, making room for an, as yet unexpected, upgrade, we’re still finding great ways to better utilize or simply to protect our iPad mini 4. If you are on the lookout for the best cases, covers, keyboards, mounts, stands, speaker and more for your iPad mini 4, pick a link below, we’ve got you covered.
That’s right, Android on your iPhone. Now, let’s talk tech: we’re not talking about wiping your iOS install or even creating a dual-boot scenario, let’s just say that Android is able to run as a full-screen app on your iPhone, similar to the Android emulator experience on your PC. There is more to it, head on in to the link to check it out!
Tablet reviews revisited – Surface Pro 4, iPad Pro, iPad Pro 9.7 and more
Nothing changes our opinion of a tablet like the launch of a replacement for the same device. You noticed above that we updated our opinions in a handful of our tablet shootout pieces, the same has happened for a number of our original tablet reviews as well. Changes in price and updates to software are the major reasons for update, but again that iPad Pro 9.7 has influenced our opinions.
Ultrabooks! Xiaomi Mi Notebook, Lenovo Air 13, Macbooks and more
Did we mention we’re covering ultrabooks? We’re off to a strong start, covering device reviews, lists of the best laptops and ultrabooks to best suite your needs and lists of apps and accessories to help you enhance your experience. Basically, we’re giving ultrabooks the same review and accessories treatement as most of our tablet, hope you enjoy.
Starting things off are a few new releases, from Xiaomi and Lenovo, then we make sure to talk Macbook and more.
As you may already know, we are a partner site along with the family at Android Authority and SoundGuys. We are happy to announce a new partner in our network, VR Source! vrsource.com is our home for all things relating to virtual reality, including the gear, apps and games that you’ll soon be enjoying in your own home. We’ll be sure to carry over the best VR related news that relates to the tablets you use, but be sure to head over there soon to check out their giveaways and our coverage of E3.
A big congratulations to last month’s winner: Jens W. of Germany is taking home the iPad Pro 9.7.
One of the better tablets out there is an Android device built by Samsung – this tablet is one of few that rock an AMOLED display, and actually comes in two different sizes. We know this is not the newest tablet out there, but if you are looking for a solid performer with a comfortable set of bells and whistles, we’re giving you the chance to take the 8-inch version home for free. Best of luck in our giveaway of the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2.
