American fans are still waiting for the release of Tales of Zestiria, but that won’t slow down Bandai Namco from making a new one. At an annual Tales event held in Yokohama, Japan, the company went ahead and announced Tales of Berseria, the next game in the popular RPG series.
Details are scarce at the moment, but it sounds a little different in that the game will star a sole female protagonist named Velvet, designed by by Matsumi Inomata. Our heroine was shown twice at the event in cutscenes made by studio Ufotable. In one, she is imprisoned in a cell, and another shows her aboard a ship of some kind.
One piece of information from the press release states that Tales of Beseria will features “cities covered in snow, perpetual summer islands, autumn leaves, and evening sunsets.”
Sounds interesting, but if I am understanding things correctly, I really like the idea of a sole character in a Tales game ala Lightning Returns or Skyrim. If Bandai Namco were to experiment and break away from the party system that appears in every Tales game, I think I would be more willing to try this one out.
Tales of Berseria will launch for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, proving just how much Japanese studios are going to be milking the PlayStation 3 for all its worth. Just remember, Persona 3 and 4 both launched for the PlayStation 2 after the PlayStation 3 came out, so don’t discard technology just because its old. Developers will find cheap and efficient ways to put its viable tech to good use, and we might yet still get an experimental hit or offbeat classic from it.
