We knew the new entry-level LTE device, the HTC Desire 510, would eventually find its way to TELUS and it is now available – in the Dark Gray only color and for $0 down on a two-year term and $200 as a flat out price with no strings attached. It will be competing with the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Core LTE and the Motorola G LTE – where the original Moto G was the best-selling phone in Motorola’s history. On TELUS, the Desire 510 is eligible for the T-Up early upgrade program as well.
The new HTC Desire 510 does offer value when it comes to the performance area, but the display and camera are still mediocre, at best. The display is large enough at 4.7-inches, but is only a FWVGA variety, which means a resolution of 854 x 480 pixels. It is rather dull and viewing angles are non-existent, however, you can see the LCD display in the outdoor sunlight. Thanks to its Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz, it flies through its tasks with speed and smoothness – it is actually a 64-bit processor that is only using 32-bit in North America. It does have 1GB of RAM, however it only has 8GB of internal storage that will be taken up by much of the Android 4.4.2 KitKat and onboard Apps…thankfully, you can add up to 128GB of additional storage via the microSD card slot. With that option, you will have plenty of room to store your photo, videos and music.
The HTC Desire 510 has a barebones 5MP main camera with no flash and only a VGA front-facing camera (FFC) for an occasional selfie for your social media sites. A 2100mAh battery supplies the power and the device is running a watered down version of Sense 6.0 with less features and there is no BoomSound on this baby – just a normal speaker found on the back of the device. This all plastic phone – although it still looks nice and feels good in the hand – measures 139.9 x 69.8 x 9.99mm and weighs in at 165 grams.
