If you’re like most people, you probably grew up with a family savings jar. Everyone puts in their spare change or dollars, and over time, you’ve saved a sizeable amount of extra cash. Problem is, many of us hardly use cash anymore. Tip Yourself is a free app that’s sort of like a digital savings jar.
The concept is pretty simple. When you want to save some spare cash, just transfer over a buck or two (or whatever amount you wish) to your virtual “tip jar,” which is just your Tip Yourself account. You can post a reason for your savings if you like, and it’s a fun tool for savings incentives. If you wanted to try the old swear jar rule, for example, every time you swear, you’d just transfer a dollar into your Tip Yourself account.
The app also shows you a timeline of your progress via a calendar. Days you saved are marked in green. The concept is simple, and sure, you could do the same thing between your bank accounts, but I like the idea of having a separate, virtual savings jar. Right now, the app is only available for iPhone, but they’re working on an Android version, too.
