Around 43 per cent of the time spent on all mobile apps by Android users is dedicated to the top 10 apps and a further 61 per cent is contained within the top 50 apps. This is troubling news if you’re an app developer looking to break make it big on the Android Market or an app developer who created the 51st most popular smartphone app.
Nielsen’s announcement supports recent statistics from Mobilewalla, which revealed that among the top 30 apps, Android Market apps had between 11,000 and 20,000 ratings compared to about 6,000 ratings across the same field in the Apple App Store. When the 210 apps beyond the top 30 were brought into consideration, Android’s average ratings per app dipped dramatically to just a few hundred per app while Apple’s ratings count were found to remain between 2,000 and 6,000.
