Safety is a huge concern for anyone, especially if you’re walking alone at night. You can’t always have someone to help you get where you need to know and carrying pepper spray can be a scary thing. These five apps will make sure someone you trust knows where you are and can get help if you need it. You’ll feel much safer going anywhere on your own.
Choose a few friends and family to help keep track of you if you need it. The app will send a request and they will be a part of your system. Share you location so they know exactly how close to home you are, set up an alarm that will go off if you haven’t checked in before time runs off or set up a fake call so you don’t have to talk to anyone you see on the street. All the controls are easy to use and if you’re really in trouble, tap the Alert Friends button and let everyone know you need help immediately. You don’t have to use the app only in an emergency but even if things seem fine but you just want some peace of mind.
React Mobile doesn’t come with any buttons to press. Begin by inviting friends then slide the circle from “I’m Fine” to “Follow Me” when you leave. Here you can plug in where you’re going and how long it is expected to take to get there. Your friend will get a message of your whereabouts. If you don’t change your status to “I’m Fine,” your friend will be alerted to take action. If you are in an emergency situation, slide the tab to Emergency and send Help Me messages to all of the friends on your list. the best thing about the app is that you don’t have to unlock your phone to use it. If you are in Follow Me or Emergency it will show up on your lock screen.
Watch Over Me works as a timer. When you leave, add in how long it will take you to get home and the app will start counting down. If you don’t make it to your location in time or extend the time, your contacts will be alerted by text or email that you need help. When you get home, hit the “I’m Safe” button to assure your friends you’re okay. Share your journey and photos with your contacts if they’re especially nervous. It will be like walking with all your friends.
OnWatch is directed specifically at college campuses, but it can be used for anyone. Open the app and have a variety of options for staying safe. You can call your contacts, set a timer so your friends know if you got home or not, call Campus Police or call 911. When you make the choice, the app will pull up a button to tap if you want to go through with the call or swipe to exit. That way you won’t make any accidental calls. If you just want some peace of mind while you’re walking, choose the “Watch My Back” option to have your friends know where you are along your walk.
Choose 6 people you really trust to look after you while you walk anywhere. Send your location, call for help or send a text message when you feel unsafe while you’re walking. The app will notify either everyone in your 6 or a specific person that you need something. It only takes two taps to send your location so anyone in the area won’t know what you’re doing. If you need general help, the app provides various hotline numbers in your area to keep you physically and mentally safe.
