There must be something in the air, because everything’s coming up “dystopian” lately: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire released on home video last week, and the new Divergent film, the first in yet another teen trilogy, hits theaters on March 21st. With this bleak outlook swirling around us, we turn to a safe place: comics. But wait, there are plenty of dystopian themes there, too. No escape! Here are five great comics that feature dystopian settings or themes:
"X-Men: Days of Future Past" by Chris Claremont and John Byrne:The grand-daddy of all dystopian “X-Men in the future” stories, this classic tale follows Kitty Pryde as she jumps through time to prevent the eradication of mutants. It’s also the basis of a blockbuster film of its own, releasing this summer.
"20th Century Boys" by Naoki Urasawa: We do not talk about manga enough here, and for those unfamiliar with the format, here’s a great place to start--with a group of kids trying to save humanity from extinction.
"Transmetropolitan" by Warren Ellis and Darick Robertson: Who better at writing dark themes mixed with cyberpunk than Warren Ellis? Awesomely named journalist Spider Jerusalem takes on social injustices and all manner of unsettling 23rd century problems (humans who graft alien parts to themselves, for one) in this landmark series.
"V for Vendetta" by Alan Moore and David Lloyd: Personal freedom is at the core of Alan Moore’s legendary dystopian graphic novel, where a post-war, totalitarian England stamps out creativity and free-thought. It’s grim but beautifully illustrated by David Lloyd.
Judge Dredd (series) by John Wagner, Brian Bolland, and more: This absurd, brutal series (now 30 years old!) tracks the titular “judge” as he polices an overpopulated Mega-City on the brink of…well, everything. It’s not for the faint of heart.
