Welcome to your Android app reviews roundup harvested from the past seven days on this ‘ere website. We’ve been busy combing the Android Market for the best tools and gaming downloads but first, a dash of news.
Adding to the ICS revelations, it appears the latest incarnation of Android will contain some brand new measures to protect against smartphone hackers. The smartphone and tablet OS is to feature ASLR (adress space layout randomisation) which works by continuously switching the memory locations where software components are loaded.
Finally, Android handset manufacturers may find themselves under a wave of fresh patent litigation after Apple managed to secure ownership of the slide to unlock feature used in a huge number of smartphones.
Enough with the news though, here’s our compilation of the week’s app reviews
The Adventures Of Tintin is the official smartphone accompaniment to Stephen Spielberg’s latest cinematic epic. An action app designed to rival its big screen brother, this Android offering sees you crossing the globe in an epic quest to track down the Secret of the Unicorn. It’s hugely impressive stuff and a huge benchmark for Google’s smartphone and tablet OS.
Borrowing heavily from Nintendo’s Wave Race franchise, Ground Effect Pro is an arcade app with a time trial edge. Your goal is to dash through a series of checkpoints with the aim of overtaking your fellow competitors and finishing in first place after three laps round some tricky terrain. This is a fast, furious and, most of all, fun app which will keep you entertained for hours to come.
There’s no better experience than sitting down with your favourite magazine and reading through a whole issue of detailed articles and immaculate design, except perhaps grabbing some spare time with your Android tablet. If only there was a way to combine the two… What’s that you cry? ‘Try Zinio, the best newsstand app available for Google’s portable OS.’ Well, if you insist.
Air Penguin is a cheery and colourful app for Android which tasks you with bouncing a flightless bird across the frozen landscapes of Antartica. A set of effortless tilt controls make this a solid free download, although the gameplay is too repetitive to warrant our unadulterated praise.
