Other than being the home to many of comic’s biggest
superheroes, New York City hosts what is quickly becoming one of the biggest comic
book conventions in the country. We bring you the biggest comics news coming
out of the New York Comic Con 2013:
The Year of the Bat:
Next year marks the 75th anniversary for the Dark Knight and his first
appearance in Detective Comics #27 back in 1939. With that, next year’s issue
of Detective Comics #27 on January 8th will be a mega-sized 104 page
book featuring a modern re-telling of Batman’s origin by Brad Meltzer and Bryan
Hitch as well as new stories by Scott Snyder and Sean Murphy, Peter J. Tomasi
and Guillem March, Paul Dini and Dustin Nguyen, Gregg Hurwitz and Neal Adams, and
new art by legendary Batman writer/artist Frank Miller, and more.
Along with the giant anniversary book, DC will also be
launching Batman Eternal, an all-new weekly series coming from Scott Snyder
along with James Tynion IV, John Layman, Ray Fawkes, Tim Seely, and artist
Jason Fabok. This all-star team of creators will be giving readers an inside look
at new characters and stories set in the world of Gotham alongside the main
story moving forward in the background. Revealed at NYCC is that Stephanie Brown, aka Batgirl aka Spoiler will also be making her return in The New 52 in this series. Amazon got a chance to talk with James
Tynion IV at NYCC so stay tuned for that interview in the near future.
Miracles do happen:
Marvel announced that they will be reprinting the legendary run of Miracleman
in January 2014. Not only is this classic 80’s run returning for old and new
readers to check out but Marvel will also be finishing this epic story by
publishing the epic conclusion. Neil Gaiman and Mark Buckingham will be finishing
their legendary story after the finished story had been left in the dark over
20 years ago.
digital: The Vampire Diaries digital comic based on the hit CW show will
finally be launching on October 31st. The digital first comic will
be featuring some of the industry’s top talents including writers B. Clay
Moore, Colleen Doran and the team of Leah Moore and John Reppion, along with artists
Tony Shasteen and Cat Staggs.
Horse will adding to the series that fans have been clamoring for as Serenity
continues through a limited six issue series by Zack Whedon and artist Georges
Jeanty with covers by Dan Dos Santos. Serenity: Firefly Class 03-K64 – Leaves on
the Wind #1 will be starting in January 2014.
In Zombie News: The
master of the horror genre, George R. Romero, co-writer and director of “Night
of the Living Dead” will be bringing a five issue limited-series to Marvel
along with artist Alex Maleev titled “Empire of the Dead.” The undead epic will
be set in New York City and it’s been teased that there may be something else
out to get some “brains” other than Zombies.
