We get a sense of deja vu when we think of Tower Raiders 2 Gold… Anyone remember our review of Robo Defense back in January? Well this is essentially the same game. Well ok, exactly the same game but with slightly improved graphics that add an extra dimension to the two that Robo Defense manages.
Perhaps we’re being a bit unfair there. The game certainly has its similarities to Robo Defense, but in this case, you’re trying to defend your crystals from attack by ground troops and vehicles. You have a limited number of crystals and you need to stop the bad guys getting their hands on them and making good their escape.
You do this by building towers on the allotted squares – the number of squares you can use varies by level – and upgrading those towers to increase their range, rate of fire and the damage they can inflict. Towers range from run-of-the-mill mini-guns to flame throwers and the awesome freeze ray that slows enemies down so you can batter them with fire more easily. Wave after wave of bad guys come at you, gradually increasing in intensity and the trick here is to make sure you’re steadily upgrading your towers as the level progresses. You do this by spending your ‘resources’ which increase with every enemy vehicle or foot soldier you destroy.
Allied to your building and upgrading of towers are ‘hero’ towers that do things like call in airstrikes and manufacture extra resource for you to spend on more devastating towers. Sadly these only work once within a certain time period, so once you’ve used it you’ll have to wait for your ‘hero’ to recharge.
Tower Raiders is a decent new twist on what’s fast becoming a hackneyed format and the 3D perspective at least gives it some legs over the opposition. It remains to be seen just how many of our Android brethren baulk at the £3.09 price tag, however…
The Bottom Line
Pricey and not the most original game on the market. Its 3D perspective gives it an edge, however, and there are some neat touches to nudge it ahead of its competitors
