The good thing about the #Samsung #GalaxyS4 is that despite being released more than two years ago it is still being updated to Android Lollipop by the South Korean giant. Initially running on Android Jelly Bean when released it then underwent an upgrade process to Android KitKat and now the official Android Lollipop update is available for the device. Although each upgrade process should ideally go smoothly without any hiccups there are instances when problems do arise.
What we will be discussing in this latest installment of our troubleshooting series are the S4 issues after Lollipop upgrade which some of our readers are experiencing. We will be providing the necessary troubleshooting steps needed to be done which hopefully will lead to a resolution.

S4 Update Disclaimer Keeps Appearing Every Restart After Lollipop Upgrade
Problem:After the lollipop update I keep getting a update disclaimer after restart or if I turn my cell off and back on hours later. And how do I stop my developer options from resetting on startup as well? Thank you in advance.
Solution: This appears to be caused by a glitch in the update process. Try to check if there are any further new software updates are available for your device and apply them. If no software updates are available then proceed with wiping the cache partition of your phone. See if the issue still persists.
If the problem still appears then the problem may be caused by the data of your previous phone software that is still present in your device. This data normally should have been removed during the update process but is still in your phone. A factory reset will fix this problem. Just make sure to backup your phone data before doing the factory reset.
The factory reset is also a recommended troubleshooting procedure for the developer options of your phone resetting on startup.
S4 Not Sending Text Message After Lollipop Update
Problem: Ever since the upgrade I am not able to send texts, even to myself. I am able to receive texts. I get a message saying delivery failed, would you like to try again? Also, when checking voicemail, I can enter my mailbox using the necessary keyboard commands but once I’m in my voice mailbox doesn’t recognize any keyboard commands. I am frustrated. I have put the S4 aside and gone back to my SIII. I have been patiently waiting for a fix from Samsung/Verizon but if you think you can resolve this sooner my hat’s off to you!
Solution: Sometimes during the upgrade process the message center number setting of your phone may be changed. This number needs to be set correctly so your phone can send out a text message. If this number has been changed or deleted then you have to set it up again.
Another troubleshooting step that you should consider is to perform a factory reset. This is highly recommended especially if your phone has just undergone a software upgrade and is experiencing issues afterwards. Just make sure to backup your phone data before performing this procedure.
The factory reset is also recommended for the keyboard commands not responding while you are on the voice mailbox menu.
S4 Register Device Prompt Every Restart After Lollipop Update
Problem:Each time I power off or restart my device it makes me register my device. I’ve never been asked to do this until I updated to lollipop.
Solution: This problem may be caused by a glitch in the phone software. Your phone may still have data from the previous software version that has not been completely removed from your device. This old data is now causing a conflict with the new software version which in turn causes the issue you are experiencing right now. To resolve this a factory reset is highly recommended as it will delete all data on your phone. Before doing this procedure make sure to backup any of your personal data that is stored in your phone.
S4 4G LTE Not Working After Lollipop Update
Problem:Just updated to 5.0.1 now can’t get my 4g LTE to work, but wifi seems fine. I use straight talk for service.
Solution: During the update process the APN setting of your phone may have been changed. These settings are needed for your phone to be able to connect to your mobile data network. I suggest you start the troubleshooting by checking the APN settings of your phone and make sure it matches the one used by Straight Talk.
For Straight Talk AT&T service the APN settings are as follows.
Name: straight talk
Proxy: Not Set
Port: Not Set
Username: Not Set
Password: Not Set
Server: Not Set
MMS Proxy: mms3.tracfone.com
MMS Port: 80
Auth Type: PAP
APN type: default,supl,mms,hipri
For Straight Talk T-Mobile service the APN settings are as follows.
Name: straight talk
Proxy: Leave blank
Username: Not Set
Password: Not Set
Server: Not Set
MMS Proxy: Leave blank
MMS Port: Leave blank
If your phone is using the correct APN settings then try to verify if you have an active mobile data subscription with your carrier. If your subscription is active then check if the mobile data switch of your phone is active. You should also make sure to check if you are getting any 4G LTE signal on your device.
S4 USB Tethering Works Intermittently After Lollipop Update
Problem:USB thetering goes on and off and sometimes my pc does not recognize my S4. This never happened before the Lollipop update.
Solution: You should first check if there are other factors involved as to why this issue is happening. Start by using a different USB cord. This cord gets damaged easily especially if it is constantly pulled, coiled, and bent. I suggest you use a different USB cord when using USB tethering. Connect your phone to the different USB ports in your computer as sometimes the issue may be with the computer USB port.
Once you have isolated any USB cord and USB port problems then it’s time to troubleshoot the phone itself. Start the troubleshooting by checking the USB port of your phone. Do you see any dirt or lint on it? If you spot any then clean it using a can of compressed air or cotton bud dipped in alcohol.
If the USB port is clean then proceed with checking the phone software itself. Start by wiping the cache partition of your phone. If the issue persists then check if it occurs when your phone is in Safe Mode. If the problem does not occur in Safe Mode then an app you installed may be causing the problem. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.
If however the problem persists even in Safe Mode then I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset.
S4 Battery Life Decreased After Lollipop Update
Problem:Since the latest OS update, my battery life has decreased dramatically. Since I was still using the original battery, I decided to replace it with a brand new OEM battery. With new battery installed and fully charged, I see no improvement. When I check the battery usage, since the last full charge the Android OS has used 3% Screen 3% and Android System 1%. Any suggestions what I should do next? Also since the update, the touch screens freezes.
Solution: One of the common complaints owner of the S4 have over the Lollipop update is that the battery life of their phone has decreased significantly. Let me point out though that not everyone is experiencing this issue as there are other owners of this device who are quite happy with the phone battery life after the Lollipop update.
The first thing that you need to check in this case is your phone settings. If the display is too bright you should lower the screen brightness and decrease its timeout. You should also turn off the services that you are not using such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Mobile Data, and Location just to name a few.
Next, check your phone apps. Do you have a lot of apps running in the background? Try to close them manually. You should also check if the apps you are using are the latest version. You can check this by going to the Google Play Store and checking the My Apps section.
In most cases, the problem why your phone battery life has decreased is because your phone still has data from the old software version in it. This data should have been removed during the update process but somehow managed to be left behind and is now causing a conflict with the new software version which in turn causes the decreased battery life. It is highly recommended that you backup your phone data first then do a factory reset.
