Twitter, the popular social network, has bought Android security firm Whisper Systems in an apparent attempt strengthen its smartphone apps.
Whisper Systems have developed five products for Android to date, including Textsecure, an encrypted text message service, and Redphone, an encrypted calling service. The company also owns programmes for encrypted data backup product, data security and network protection.
“Now that we’re joining Twitter, we’re looking forward to bringing our technology and our expertise into Twitter’s products and services,” commented the company in a statement.
Though it’s not yet clear what Twitter intend to do with Whisper Systems’ software, it seems likely the company will incorporate the technology into its mobile apps or integrate it into the social network’s core service.
