Anytime I hear the name Ubisoft mentioned, I always focus my attention on the story. The game developer has a long successful history in creating dynamic console games, as well as mobile games. A few weeks ago, word of a new Assassin's Creed game (Assassin's Creed: Identity) in development for Android/iOS, seemingly appeared out of nowhere. This week, it has been announced, that a new game from the Ubisoft Shanghai Studio will arrive next week. The game is called The Bot Squad: Puzzle Battles. It will arrive in the Play Store October 16th.
The Bot Squad: Puzzle Battles is a mash-up of a couple of different game genres that include puzzles and tower defense. The first screenshots and game play videos, show a colorful and action-filled game universe. The world is inhabited by uniquely designed bots in search for energy. The game has a full campaign where you will have the opportunity to "Learn about the on-going struggle for energy that tears apart Dynamo City as you progress through the adventure." - Ubisoft
Unlike typical tower defense games, where you defend against waves of enemies by building towers, The Bot Squad allows you to be the invader on the game maps. You are tasked with gathering stars and delivering them to an energy core. The different maps are filled with defenders that will attack you. Your bots have to survive the attacks as they make their way to the core. The game play style is closer to 11-Bit Studios' type of games like Anomaly Warzone Earth or Anomaly 2, but it doesn't stop there.
Adding depth to the The Bot Squad, Ubisoft has designed the game play, to allow you to play as the defender in the game too. Yes, tower offense and tower defense built into the same game. This is a refreshing take on a game genre that is certainly full of titles in the Play Store. The Bot Squad: Puzzle Battles has built into the game a tech-tree that allows you to upgrade your bots to make the game more interesting, whether you are on offense or defense, depending on the map that you are playing. The Bot Squad: Puzzle Battles will certainly challenge your strategy and puzzle solving skills.

As mentioned before, Ubisoft knows how to make a good game. We don't have too long to wait to see how good a game it will be. It appears as though the game will be free to play, based on what we have heard and seen in game play videos. In the videos, you can see the standard battery/energy meter that requires filling after playing a certain amount of levels. Let's hope the implementation of the free-to-play model leans closer to being able to play the game, instead of continuing to pay for the game. Since Ubisoft is at the helm, I am more confident about this game being free-to-play done right. We will see next week when it arrives in the Play Store.
