If there’s one Android handset whose owners aren’t expecting an Ice Cream Sandwich it’s the T-Mobile G1, the very first mobile to be powered by Google’s smartphone OS.
In a heartening example of modding by the ingenious XDA Developers forum, the anaemic G1 has been brought bang up to date with an injection of Android 4.0.
As you’d expect for such an ancient handset, the G1′s Ice Cream Sandwich experience is as slow as a pensioner trying to run for the bus with even screen scrolling proving a fairly taxing task. As for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and screen rotation, don’t even ask.
Still, considering this three-year-old smartphone should be for destined for the great handset cemetary in the sky it’s hugely impressive that anyone has actually manged to get the latest version of Android at all.
