These days, if you stumble and fall in the mobile app universe, you are sure to land either on a task management or an image sharing app. That isn’t a bad thing entirely, as we get the chance to be very picky. Since a lot of image capturing and sharing happens from mobile phones, it’s a comfort to have such a choice of photo sharing apps at our disposal.
Instead of having tens of mindless photo sharing apps, a couple of apps that focus on certain niche would be immensely helpful. Fancy for Android helps users to show off the things they have/love and to window shop for things they admire. Are you as curious as I am to check out this app?
Fancy is for curators of style. Developers pitch the app as part blog, part magazine, and part bookmarking tool. And at the end of the review, I found their claim to be true. It’s a place to share and discover great stuff and to curate a collection of things that define your style. The app is very lightweight and, since it supports Android versions 1.6 and upwards, you can run it even on monolithic devices from the past.
Ease of Use
One thing that gets my attention with whatever app I am reviewing – be it on iOS, Android, Windows or Web – is the ability to sign in with my existing social network accounts. So, I was naturally delighted to see the launch screen that without ambiguity declares that one can sign in with either Twitter or Facebook accounts if they aren’t willing to go through a standard sign up process.
But, in practice, it wasn’t just one click, and I had to go through two different steps to get into the app. It’s really uncool for the developers to deceive users and double the effort. Simple mistakes like this lead to poor reviews and bad word of mouth.
Fancy sports a minimalist, yet elegant look. The three tabs at the top are where all the action lies. By default, you will land on the tab named New. In this tab, all new additions to the stream of things that users admire are showcased as and when they are uploaded.
New Listings & Listing Page
Once you are comfortable with the app and have started following users who share your interests, you can toggle the selection at the top to check out only those updates from your clique.
As you scroll down the New tab, you will notice images after images of items that have captured the fancy of fellow Fancy app users. All images are accompanied with a title that clearly defines the item and the name of the user who posted it for you.
Comments & Profile Page
Tap on a item to see the complete description and comments. If you really liked a listing, you can upvote it by clicking on the Fancy button. From here, you can see all those who have fancied the listing so far. The comments screen is simple like the rest of the app and since they all have been validated with a user name and a profile pic, comments are pretty much on point and are decent.
By tapping on the profile pic, you can bring up the profile page of a user. This screen carries the social contact information of the user and a thumbnail view of all his postings. Hit the Follow button to stay on top all his/her updates in the future.
Endless listings of bizarre items not for you? Head over to the Browse section of the app and you will find neatly compiled categories. As you might have guessed, listings under each category are in line with your tastes.
The Shuffle section of the app is great for passing the time. Every time you hit Shuffle, a random image is displayed.
Adding Listings and Sharing
Adding your own listing is simple. Just select from where you will be uploading the image from (from an album or by using the Camera app), add a description and go for it! It’s great that the app allows you to upload images not only from the albums, but also from the SD card (via a file explorer, if you have installed one).
Adding a Listing and Sharing Options
Listings aren’t locked to the app and you can share them instantly via email and other popular social networks. If the uploader has added the details as to where you can purchase the item, that can be accessed from this page as well.
Fancy is a neatly designed app that serves those who love to discover and buy fancy stuff. The major selling point of the app is that it carefully balances itself by helping users discover stuff without forcing affiliate links upon them. The absence of the in-your-face marketing techniques is what makes Fancy such a fanciful app.
It’s also really refreshing to see the developers disclosing upfront that they collect anonymous usage data to improve the service. The same can be disabled from the Settings screen. However, user opt-in is the right way to do this and hopefully the developers change this system in the future. If you are a shopaholic, you are going to be in trouble controlling yourself from making impulse buys with this nifty app!
