Vodafone have announced their own in-app billing scheme for the Android Market, allowing customers to pay for apps via their monthly phone bill. This means Vodafone UK and Germany customers will be able to purchase apps without the need to enter their credit card details through the temperamental Google Checkout.
According to the mobile operator, in some countries more than 90 per cent of smartphone users can be unwilling or unable to use credit cards for app payments. Accordingly, developers will now have direct access to a fresh market of Android owners totalling several million potential customers. Vodafone is to expand operator billing to beyond Britain and Germany soon, but for now the service will be restricted to users in those countries who have purchased their devices through online and retail channels.
Google is said to be in talks to employ a similar scheme across other mobile networks which can only be a good thing in terms of encouraging Android owners to make the most of their smartphones.
